Episode 12: Cyclops and Myopia In Episode 12, the reader can see how the the citizen’s narrow viewpoint, belligerence and general aggressive and bellicose nature, inside the pub, mirror Cyclops’ cave and mentality. Joyce employs Homer’s mythological Cyclops as a metaphor to describe the partisan divide that tears at the fabric of Irish life. Bloom’s intelligent, moderate and temperate nature is reminiscent of Homer’s Ulysses.
