The challenge… • Today’s challenge is to construct a strong building out of tape and index cards, using one of three common architectural shapes- a square, an arch, or a triangle. • Chose one shape and build a two-story structure out of index cards and tape. • To pass the building inspection, the structure has to be able to support dog biscuits on the roof.

  5. Materials… • 3” x 5” index cards (50 per group) • Transparent tape (1 roll per group) • Dog biscuits • Choose the strongest shape to build with. You may only use one shape in your design (square, arch, or triangle) • Your house must be a two-story structure • The shape must stand upright; cannot rest on side.

Get ready to design and build… • Chose a shape • Brainstorm ideas for constructing two-story structure • GOALS… • Build a strong building • Be creative • Use the Engineering Design Process • Use what you learned from the Newspaper Tower challenge last week • Remember architects and engineers care about strength but they also care about quality, beauty, and function.

  7. Keep in mind… • You are building with only one shape because that lets you judge the strength of that shape better. • If you used two or more shapes, you wouldn’t be able to tell which shape was doing the most work. • You may reinforce your structure by building shapes within shapes as long as you are using one shape.

  9. What happened… • How many biscuits could your building hold? • How many groups used triangles? Arches? Squares? • Why was one shape used more that another? • What did you like about other team’s designs?

  10. Extra! Extra! Think all about it… • Which shape do you think is the strongest? • Is there another shape that is also strong? • What is the most unstable shape? • How did you decide which was the strongest shape? • How did you make your building strong enough to support dog biscuits? • Name some structures that use the three shapes we worked with today.

  11. How can we apply what we learned from this challenge to a S.T.E.M. career?

  12. Cool Science Jobs… Architectural Engineer- An architect decides on the form and appearance of a building, but it’s the architectural engineer who makes sure everything inside it works. They can give a skyscraper a fast elevator, soundproof a concert hall, and solar energy panels for a green school. Engineering Geologist- Before a building is built, engineering geologists study the rocks and soil beneath it, making sure it has a stable foundation. They also evaluate whether buildings, bridges, and roads face dangers like landslides, earthquakes, and flooding.
