  1. Dual Enrollment Student Orientation 2016-2017 Welcome to NOVA Dual Enrollment

  2. Welcome to College! • Congratulations on becoming a college student! • Dual enrollment classes are official Northern Virginia Community College courses that earn you actual college credits and go on a collegetranscript. • Once you have been enrolled in your dual enrollment classes, you will officially be a college student, taking college classes—just as if you were sitting in a classroom at NOVA! • Welcome to Dual Enrollment. Welcome to NOVA. • We’re glad to have you with us and glad you chose to join us.

  3. Important Information About NOVA Dual Enrollment • myNOVA Access • Tuition & Financial Aid • Holds & Retakes • Enrollment and Schedule • Academic Information • College Transcripts • After Graduation • Student Resources • Dual Enrollment Contact Information

  4. myNOVA Account • All students who apply to NOVA receive a NOVA Student ID (EMPLID) number and a myNOVA account username and password. Your student account and ID number will remain the same if you come to NOVA after graduation from high school • You can use myNOVA to do the following: • View your current enrollment • Send your NOVA transcripts to other colleges • Use your NOVA Gmail account • Use NOVA’s Blackboard if your class requires it. • How to log in to all myNOVA applications: • Go to www.nvcc.edu. • Click on the “myNOVA” yellow box in the top right corner. • Click on the “myNOVA” green box in the middle of the page. • Enter your NOVA username and password to sign in. • (If you do not know your password, call the IT Help Desk at 703.426.4141. Have your 7-digit NOVA ID number and username ready.) If you don’t know your NOVA ID number or myNOVA username, ask your instructor.

  5. Tuition & Financial Aid • Tuition • Dual enrollment (DE) classesoffered at your high school are FREE of charge. Classes taken online through ELI or on campus are offered at our in-state tuition rates. • Financial Aid • NOVA DE students are presently not eligible for financial aid. • Because NOVA DE grades are a part of your college record, low grades and withdrawals can impact your future financial aid eligibility. Pay attention to your grades and to the Drop and Withdrawal Dates listed in your syllabus. • Your NOVA grade may be different than your high school grade for your NOVA DE class. Financial aid eligibility is determined based on your NOVA grades, not your high school grades. • For more information about Satisfactory Academic Progress see the following link. • http://www.nvcc.edu/financialaid/policies/sap.html

  6. Holds & Retakes • Holds • When you apply to NOVA, holds are placed on your NOVA student account to ensure that NOVA DE policies are followed. As a high school student, you are not able to enroll in classes by yourself; a NOVA DE Registrar will enroll you in your high school DE classes. When you graduate, you can work with either a NOVA Pathway Counselor or a NOVA GPS First-Year Advisor to become a curricular student at NOVA. You can view any holds that you have by following the directions in the link below. • http://www.nvcc.edu/novaconnect/students/tuts/viewholds.html • Retaking DE Classes • If you would like to improve a grade you earned in a NOVA DE class, you may retake this class on campus. Be aware that only your last letter grade earned, not the higher of the two grades, is counted for your GPA and for curricular requirements.

  7. Enrollment and Schedule • You must apply to NOVA, meet the enrollment criteria, and submit a completed Intent Form to be enrolled in a NOVA DE class. You cannot take a NOVA DE class without completing a NOVA application, meeting the placement testing requirements/exemptions, and submitting a completed Intent Form for each of your DE classes. • After your class is officially enrolled, you should verify your enrollment by logging into your myNOVA account. If you believe that you should be enrolled but are not, notify your teacher or high school counselor immediately. • Although your high school class meets for the entire school year, NOVA DE courses are enrolled based on the NOVA semester schedule. Your NOVA DE course syllabus will indicate in which NOVA semester you are enrolled. Many high school classes are actually two different NOVA classes. For example, English 12 DE is actually ENG 111 and ENG 112.

  8. Important Schedule Dates • Each NOVA DE class has official Start and End Dates, as well as Drop and Withdrawal Dates. These are listed in the course syllabus. • Dropping a Class: If you no longer want to take your NOVA DE class, you can be removed from it by the Drop Date. Dropping the class will not have an impact on your NOVA transcript. With your agreement, your instructor will send an e-mail to the NOVA DE Registrar. You should login to your myNOVA account to verify that your class has been dropped. • Withdrawing from a Class: If you need to be removed from your class after the Drop Date, you may also withdraw from your NOVA DE class by the Withdrawal Date. A withdrawal places a “W” on your college transcript but does not impact your college GPA. To withdraw, your instructor will, with your permission, complete the NOVA DE Withdrawal Form and send it to the NOVA DE Registrar. Be aware, though, that too many “W”s on a college transcript can impact your ability to receive financial aid in the future. . You should login to your myNOVA account to verify that you have been withdrawn from the class.

  9. Academic Information • Academic Warning and Probation • If you are not successful in your NOVA DE class, you may be placed on Academic Warning or Probation at NOVA. Your academic status is determined by your NOVA GPA and the number of NOVA credits you have attempted. • For more information about academic standing see the following link. • https://www.nvcc.edu/curcatalog/policies/standing.html • Dean’s List • If you take six or more credits in a semester and have a GPA of 3.50 or higher, you will be honored by being placed on NOVA’s Dean’s List. Your NOVA transcript will reflect this honor. • Presidential Scholars • If you take nine or more credits in a semester, have a GPA of 3.75 or higher, and have completed at least 20 credits at NOVA, you will be recognized as a NOVA Presidential Scholar. Your NOVA transcript will reflect this honor.

  10. College Transcripts • Your transcript shows your final NOVA grades in your NOVA DE classes—including W’s—your GPA for each semester, and any special Academic Standings like Dean’s List or Academic Probation. • Your NOVA grades may be different from your high school grades. • You can request your transcripts through your myNOVA account. For more information, see the following link. • http://www.nvcc.edu/transcripts/ • Transcripts are free and you may request as many as you like. Check your unofficial transcripts often and have an official transcript sent to yourself at the end of each academic year.

  11. After Graduation • Attending NOVA • If you attend NOVA after graduation, your NOVA Student ID (EMPLID) number and myNOVA username and password will be the same. You do not need to reapply to NOVA. • If you took the Virginia Placement Test (VPT) within two years, you may not have to retest. SOL and PSAT scores cannot be used after you graduate from high schooland you may need to take the VPT. • When choosing NOVA classes, meet with either a NOVA Pathway counselor or NOVA GPS First-Year Advisor to choose a major and have the Dual Enrollment hold removed. • See the following link for more information. http://www.nvcc.edu/startstrong/index.html • Transferring to Another College • If you plan to attend a college besides NOVA, you will need to have your official transcripts sent to that school. • See the following link for more information. http://www.nvcc.edu/transcripts/
