  11. State History • In 1867 the United states secretary of State William H. Seward arranged for the United States to buy Alaska from Russia for 2 cents per acre. The total amount we paid was $7.2million dolars. Back then people called it Sewards Folly. Boy were they wrong! In the 1890s gold rushes brought thousands of people to Alaska. Alaska became a state in 1959. In 1964 oil was discovered. With oil and gold, Alaska was a great a purchase. Besides, look at all the cool natural resources we have! We are one great state!
