They didn't want the new government to keep people from speaking up about issues and concerns they had with the government. This freedom prevents the government from punishing people for expressing their opinions. It does not, however, protect them from repercussions they may have at work or in the public from voicing their opinions. ” –www.ducksters.com/history/us_government.com

  4. What is an example of Freedom of Speech? • A newspaper reporter writes something negative about the President

  5. Freedom of Speech Can be Limited • If what you say can cause harm to other people, your right to freedom of speech would be limited.

  7. Other RIGHTS of AMERICANS: • Freedom of the press • Freedom of speech • Freedom of religion • The right to vote • Equal rights and opportunities for all

  8. Scenario: A citizen has been arrested. What rights does this citizen have? • Choice to choose which jail cell they will be in • Choice to wear handcuffs • Choice to speak to a lawyer • Choice of the judge

  9. All citizens have rights, according to the US Constitution. For example: • We have a right to share our own ideas, through words and print and news. • We have a right to go to any church that we choose. • However, we DO NOT have a right to take things that aren’t ours.

  10. As citizens, there are some things that we HAVE to do (a duty or responsibility) according to the U.S. government. • Example: “jury duty” or serving on a jury • You sit with a group of other citizens to help decide if someone is guilty or not of a crime

  11. Civic Responsibilities • These are things that we MUST DO as citizens • Examples: • Pay taxes • Serving on a jury • Obey laws

  12. How can we protect our rights and freedoms? • By voting! • If we participate in the government, we are better able to protect our rights and freedoms.

  13. Scenario: A Hurricane hits the Gulf of Mexico and Destroys oil wells. No more oil is being produced. • What could happen? • Oil prices will increase

  14. Scenario: A stoplight is needed on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Lois St. How should the Dearborn community take action? • Petition for a stoplight • This means to go around to people in the neighborhood and have them sign a piece of paper that supports the new stoplight being put in.

  15. How are these citizens being responsible?

  16. Limits to Freedoms • “The "clear and present danger" test is a basic principle for deciding the limits of free speech.” • “Freedom of assembly has to be balanced with other people's rights if it disrupts public order, traffic flow, freedom to go about normal business or peace and quiet. ”
