  1. What are the key words that match these definitions ? Write down 4 you were least confident about.

  2. Work out the order of the sentences in each argument and write them out. Remember to give a subheading. ** Give one reason why each argument is good or bad. • Fine Tuning • The chances of all these forces being perfectly tuned by accident is very unlikely. • This means someone must have designed the Big Bang and the natural laws to be like that. • The universe must have a designer – God. The natural laws in the universe eg gravity, strong nuclear force, are perfectly “tuned” to make the world habitable – able to sustain life. Paley’s Watch • An eye can be as complex as a watch. An eye could not build itself either – it would not know how. • The world is full of complex natural objects. No-one would think a watch built itself. • It needs an intelligent designer to guide the process. It needs God. • It could not evolve, because Evolution can’t plan what bits it would need to make an eye. It’s too unlikely to happen by chance. Fine Tuning vs Paley’s Watch Both arguments try to prove that the world must have been designed by God.

  4. Fine Tuning For each argument explain one reason it is a good argument + one reason how someone could argue against it. • Paley’s Watch • FOR • Odds of all these important natural laws being perfectly tuned by chance = same as odds that a wild monkey would type out the complete works of Shakespeare • no other known planet or universe has these conditions of life: suggests we are unique • FOR • Odds of nature creating a complex object like an eye by accident with all the different bits needed is unlikely • evolution has not been proven to be able to create new species/ new complex objects, although it can improve on existing species / complex objects • AGAINST • Perhaps in future someone will discover that a prototype existed for the human eye or other complex objects, proving that it could have evolved. • AGAINST • It could be we have not yet found another universe with the same conditions as in the Big Bang – or they would also have created these fine-tuned laws for another world.

  5. How to prove that God exists God Created the World God Designed the World • Fine Tuning • Paley’s Watch • First Cause Argument Take turns with your partner to explain to them why God exists using each of these arguments in turn. Your partner should ask you one question to try and disprove what you are saying. Take turns with your partner to explain to them why God exists using each of these arguments in turn.
