  2. “I Will Never Know Why” Determining author’s purpose, bias, and objectives by writing a rhetorical precis

  3. Objective • SWBAT to critique their “IWNKW” rhetorical precis by highlighting the elements of a precis in their own statements and comparing their precis in groups. They will then synthesize the best elements of their precis by writing a group precis statement for “IWNKW”.

Susan Klebold- “I Will Never Know Why”: Rhetorical Analysis Reminder 1) Read/Annotate for: • Appeals to Rhetoric: ethos, logos, pathos • DIDST: Diction, imagery, details, syntax, tone • TAPS: Thesis, Audience, Points of Support, Suggested Insights 2) Create a PAPA: Purpose, Argument, Persona, Audience 3) Formulate a rhetorical precis

  5. “I Will Never Know Why”: Rhetorical Analysis • Pathos, Logos, Ethos • Syntax, Tone, Diction • Parallel Structure • Dichotomy/Juxtaposition • Figurative Language (tone, metaphor, etc)

  6. What does a Rhetorical Precis Do? • The precis is a concise statement that discusses the author’s purpose in writing an article, essay, or speech. • It includes information on the author’s choice of rhetorical strategies and the author’s intended effect.

  7. Sentence #1 will include the following: • Name of the author and (if possible: a phrase describing the credentials of the author) • The type (e.g. essay, lecture, research paper, etc.) and title of the work • The date, if available (inserted in parentheses) • A rhetorically accurate verb (such as “assert,” “argue,” “suggest,” “imply,” “claim,” etc.) that describes what the author is doing in the text • A “THAT” clause in which you state the major assertion (thesis statement) of the author’s text

  8. Sentence #2 will include the following: • An explanation of how the author develops and/or supports the thesis (such as by comparing and contrasting, narrating, illustrating, defining, RHETORICAL ELEMENTS, etc.) • Present your explanation in the same chronological order/order of frequency + importance that the items of support are presented by the author in the text

  9. Sentence #3 will include the following: • A statement of the author’s purpose • Followed by an IN ORDER TO clause in which you explain what the author wants the audience to do or feel as a result of reading the work

  10. Sentence #4 will include the following: • A description of the intended audience • A description of the tone the author uses

Rhetorical Precis • HW: Write a rhetorical precis for Susan Klebold’s “I Will Never Know Why” by using the handouts given • Today: We will critique our rhetorical precis by highlighting the different precis requirements and comparing them amongst your groups. You will then write a group precis taking the best elements from all group members.

  12. Your Rhetorical Precis • Highlight and identify your 4 sentences in your precis. • Make note of anything you may have missed. • Put a * by the best sentence in your precis. • Share your precis with your group.

  13. Group Rhetorical Precis • As a group, write a rhetorical precis using the best elements of your combined precis statements. • Make sure that your group precis statement is accurate, concise, and includes the 4 necessary traits of a rhetorical precis. • Each person in the group will take turns writing 1 sentence!

  14. PAPA Square • As a group, identify the best Purpose, Argument, Persona, and Audience explanations + quotes and create a group PAPA square to accompany your rhetorical precis.

  15. Homework: • Revise your precis based on our activity today and TYPE up the newest version of your precis for homework.
