  2. Major internet search engine use complex algorithms to source content from various sites on World Wide Web in response to user queries. These algorithms are susceptible to manipulation by miscreants Webmasters to gain higher ranking for their web pages in search engine results page (SERP). Blekkois a new age consumer facing search engine that through a mix of algorithms and human intervention seeks to eliminate the scourge of scams from its results. • In the following paragraphs we will look at how SERP works, how they can be manipulated, and the steps search engines are taking to prevent these sorts of manipulations.

  3. What is SERP? • Search engine results page is the result that the search engine returns in response to a keyword query. The search result displays two kinds of listing which are: • Organic SERP listing—it is the original listing that has been indexed by the search engine spider. Search engines return results based on the relevance of the keyword using algorithm equations. • Paid SERP listings—it is the sponsored links that the search engine display after charging a certain fees from website owners. In short, they can be called a paid form of advertisement where search engines are paid by websites to display their pages.

  4. How can SERP be manipulated? • As the power of internet grows and it becomes the major source of information on a wide variety of topics, websites desperately vie for user’s attention and money. • There are potentially billions of websites today crowding the market and making the competition intensely tough. • Some unscrupulous webmasters believe that the end justifies the means and resort to a wide variety of tricks to induce the search engine to give a higher listing to their websites. • Some major search engine gives preference to websites that have a large number of links. A method used to determine the relevancy of a website has made it easier for tricksters to increase their rank by indulging in the buying of links.

  5. Others form a group and link with each other to fool search engines. Major search engines, upon catching such sites, demote their rankings or take the extreme, but welcome, step of banning them all together. • Page stuffing is another popular means used by scammers to deprive the end users from getting the maximum from their search query by suppressing competition. • First, they create a website that scores high on SERP. Then, they duplicate that page to ensure that the duplicate page too will get higher ranking and drive out the competition. • A duplicitous webmaster may create sham websites that will do little than redirecting the user to particular website or websites that have no bearing whatsoever to user’s original query.

  6. Frauds scout the Internet to gather information about the trending topics. They add keywords related to these topics in their websites. The end result is that search engines pick up these websites owing to the inclusion of the popular keywords. • Visitors are then subjected to the frustrating experience of being directed to sites that have no connection whatsoever to the information they are seeking. • Another trick used by fraud webmasters to skew results is to stuff their websites with keywords that may be invisible to users but are picked up by search engine spiders. • Blekkois a new age search engine that involves human experience and expertise in delivering results to ensure that their quality does not suffer owing to above mentioned manipulative techniques.

  7. It is a search engine that believes in transparency and giving preference to quality over quantity. It endeavors to deliver high quality, spam free results from the most trusted sites. • In the following section, we will look at some of the latest attempts by this consumer facing search engine to eliminate the menace of spam and manipulation by Black Hat SEO techniques. • Sometime back, a major search engine, stung by the criticism that it is doing little to end the menace of spam and low quality results, made some changes in its algorithms to push down sites with low quality and content in SERP ranking. • The move, though being long overdue, failed to generate enthusiasm among critics who termed it as putting new wine in an old bottle.

  8. The new age search engine launched in 2010 has vowed to take the task of eliminating spam to the finish line. The search engine started by banning 20 sites initially. But as the legendary astronomer Neil Armstrong had remarked after landing on the moon- it is a small step for man but a giant leap for mankind. • Working the same principle this site engine till date has banned more than a million sites that failed to pass its strict quality yardstick.

  9. Conclusion • Consumers are increasingly fed up of websites that use unsavory tactics like keyword stuffing, page stuffing, and link buying to increase their SERP ranking. • Users are directed to websites that provide worthless or no information. People are lured by these sites due to their higher rankings in search results and the increased traffic allows them to make more money through online ads. • Blekkois a search engine that delivers quality results by looking at the number of topics a website covers so as to maintain its reputation among users.
