  9. Summary QOS • Entertainment and Data Networks are Converging • Managing QoS in the Home Network is Essential for Positive User Experience • UPnP™ will provide mechanisms for enabling QoS in the home network

  10. What’s Missing: Security Vic Lortz • Scenarios and requirements defined early 2001 • Security Working Committee established August, 2001 • Version 0.9 completed December, 2002 • Review/reconsideration of specs early-mid 2003 (see next slide) • Process is back on track, Steering Committee vote expected early November, 2003

  11. Where Microsoft is going Harish Naidu • “Fjord” release in 2004 • Bridging UPnP 1.0 to the PnP bus in “Longhorn” • Moving Web services into the device space as appropriate • We are committed to the same level of community support • Tools • Plugfests • Events • Creating a Web services profile for devices

  12. Opportunities and Challenges

  13. Conclusions Echelon • With existing technology, everyday devices (LonWorks devices) can successfully be mapped into UPnP domain. • Further work is required to commercialize the hardware and software bridge.

  14. Summary DHWG • PC, CE and mobile device convergence at home is here • Consumers want to create, consume, manage and share digital content in the home easily • Industry leaders share a common goal and approach to enable the transparent home network • Interoperability, open and fair standards are key • The digital home environment fuels new business opportunities For more information: www.dhwg.org

  15. Relationships State of the Union • DSL Forum – Internet Gateway • Digital Home Working Group • Mike Stelts to address us Wednesday • Consumer Electronics Association • R7.4 – VHN, R7.6 – DENi • Bill Rose to address us later today • CableLabs - QoS • International Committee for Information Technology Standards V2 – IT Access Devices • National Association of Convenience Stores • And more…

  16. CE Industry Needs Bill Rose • In room connectivity • Multi-room connectivity • Agreed upon standards • Mass Market Sales Channels • Compelling applications

  17. Summary/Opportunities Steve Whalley • The digital trend is creating a enormous opportunity • Digital home growth will only occur with easy connectivity • First steps - build and promote digital home solutions • Networked CE equipment + content services • PC + digital media adapter + broadband • Build for interoperability • UPnP Technology: www.upnp.org • DHWG: www.dhwg.org • Intel Developer Network: www.intel.com/technology/dhdevnet • Explore bundling opportunities • Intel is helping promote bundles with Pentium® 4 processor-based PCs
