    3. Targeted English (Fall, 2004 -) Students with identified reading or writing problems (SATV, ACCUP, Writing sample) Credit bearing course (ENGL 101) Supplemental instruction Writing Fellow (coach) Facilitated group study Book Club

    4. Activities in Targeted Sections (1) Writing Fellow Graduate student or senior English major trained to work on drafts with students 1 individual meeting per week Group study Graduate assistants trained to help students with specific study skills 1 group meeting per week Advising Peer advisors provide liaison with first year advising program

    5. Activities in Targeted Sections (2) Book Club: 1 meeting per week Students select a book from an approved list Facilitated by faculty/staff member Co-facilitated by a student Read book together Write for 10-15 minutes addressing a prompt Discuss what we wrote (and other issues) Class presentation on the book (creative)

    6. It Takes a Village (Town) Fall 2006 personnel involved in Targeted EN 180 students (9 sections) 100 instructors and support personnel Instructors Advisors Graduate students Undergraduate peer advisors Learning Assistance personnel Book club facilitators (faculty, staff, students)

Targeted Math Initiative Began Fall, 2004 Focused on students needing calculus for their desired major but not prepared for it Now 2-tier approach for students <540 SAT: Targeted basic math (no credit) for weakest students (remedial arithmetic and algebra) Targeted pre-calculus (3 credit) for students with marginal math skills

Outcomes of Targeted program Rate of D/F/W/I in first-semester writing F 2005: All sections 16%; Targeted 18% F 2006: All sections 15%; Targeted 19% Rate of D/F/W/I in second-semester writing S 2005: All sections 18%; Targeted 25% S 2006: All sections 16%; Targeted 17% Rate of Academic Dismissal (EN and MA) F 2005: All 1st semester 6%; Targeted 12% F 2006: All 1st semester 6%; Targeted 7%
