General Education Requirements

Physical Fitness and Nutrition [2 courses; 2-4 units]

One of the following courses is required: CourseTitle Units

PED 100 Fitness through Movement 1

PED 300 Optimal Health 2

FCS 315 Personal, Family, and Community Health 3

Physical Education courses must have both activity and lecture components that are measureable. It is not enough to know about the subject and not practice it.

Fitness through Movement – 80% physical activity, 20% lecture

Optimal Health – 100% lecture in class (excluding physical testing days), physical activity outside of class time

OPTIMAL HEALTHMore than the absence of disease!

Step Test Record Holder

Jessica Mercado

Most Controversial Aspect of the Course

BODY COMPOSITION!How athletic departments and teams handle it.

Labels, is there a more loaded word than “obese?”

How should body comp factor into class requirements

PED 100 informational

PED 300 Fitness Assessment - 5% est. BF, 15% cardio

Most students change their eating habits, a few don’t buy into exercising

What I like the most about the course

Opportunities to discuss:

Body image – what is possible, what isn’t

Media - message of dissatisfaction

God vs. Culture – Dare to be a Daniella

Alcohol – Health, legacy, 21, Vietnam, cig

Stewardship – Blood drives, labor

Natural Selection - Tohono O’odham and Pima Indian Tribes

Desert Survival

Could you survive in a desert?

Tohono O’odham and Pima Indian Tribes survived for centuries in the deserts of the southwest.

50 years ago the had no word for diabetes and their was no obesity.

Directions for Course Improvements

Longitudinal Studies

Class more closely linked to cafeteria

Counter cultural strength

Stewardship (Guilt, Gratefulness)

“If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not live with words or in tongue but with actions and in truth.” I John 3:17-18
