Black Rock Yacht Club – JBBS Program • Program Goals • Designed to fit in the gap between organized JSA/Club youth programs and adult sailing • Emphasis on sailing skills and participation – encouraging both young women and men to sail in atmosphere of mutual respect • Opportunity to sail with adults as contributing crew

  4. Black Rock Yacht Club – JBBS Program • Club’s Focus • Commitment to Big Boat program • Integral component of Junior Sailing Program • The Board Of Governors supports this program and several members of the BOG participate and make their boats available

Black Rock Yacht Club – JBBS Program • Structure • Component of Junior Sailing Program • Reports up through Flag Officer • Budget process / fees – all part of Junior Sailing program registration and budgeting • Two levels of sailors – Advanced and Standard • Two sessions per week for Advanced group, One session for Standard group.

Black Rock Yacht Club – JBBS Program • Planning • Recruit at least one Boat and Owner/Skipper • Commitment should be 1 or 2 sessions per week – for 6 weeks • Big Boat Sailing Instructor • One Design and Big Boat experience a must • College age coach or older, additional salary or adjustment in hours • Experienced Racers – Adult Coaches • Specific Instruction – navigation, sail trim etc… • Parent Facilitator's • Program support – not oversight • Communications with all sailors is extremely important

Black Rock Yacht Club – JBBS Program • Planning(continued) • Legal • Boat(s) covered by Club insurance • Parental waivers • Draft agreement / memo for damaged equipment • Schedule for Training and Racing • Coordinate with JSA Schedule and Yacht Club Calendar • Identify conflicts with small boat program / JSA Events

  8. Black Rock Yacht Club – JBBS Program • Target Sailors • Ages 14 to 18 • Big Boat program participants DO NOT have to be already sailing 420’s/Blue Jays or Lasers • New Members, teenagers with interest and willingness to learn • Women and Men are welcome

  9. Black Rock Yacht Club – JBBS Program • Parental Participation • Positive encouragement • Parental support program • Team clothing, hats, t-shirts • Car Pools, regattas, housing

Black Rock Yacht Club – JBBS Program • Start – Up • Communication – club newsletter, web site • Mailing to potential juniors • Initial meeting with juniors, parents, sailing coach, skippers and Flag Officer • Build enthusiasm and sell the program • Review schedule – establish expectations, attendance policy and SAFETY guidelines • PFD for ALL on board (adults included) at ALL times.

Black Rock Yacht Club – JBBS Program • Training • Boat safety • Seven basic crew positions • Assign positions – emphasize teamwork • Cross training for each job – skills will surface and help self-selection into proper positions • Sail handling, tacking and jibing, sail trim, boat speed, spinnaker, racing out on the course and strategy • All based on progression of the group

Black Rock Yacht Club – JBBS Program • Junior Big Boat Racing Events • Black Rock Invitational Regatta • One day regatta, three races, listed on the JSA Calendar • Dorade Race • Historical Regatta – One day event • Beachpoint Overnight Race • Great opportunity for junior overnight race • Radio call-ins throughout the night

Black Rock Yacht Club – JBBS Program • Sailing and Racing Opportunities • Trained crew for active racers at Club • Optional – encourage Club racers to get Juniors to crew • Wednesday night (any night) racing series • PHRF weekend races • Major Regattas – distance racing • BRYC JBBS Sailors have raced in … • Block Island Race • Vineyard Race • Round Long Island Race • Bermuda Race
