Understanding the nature of sl l.jpg
Understanding the Nature of SL

  • Daniel Breen Study (1970)

    • Questionnaires to 148 colleges, 60 responded, 40 had leadership development programs.

    • Six commonalities of leadership programs:

      • Students were always involved in planning the programs

      • The student activities department took a major role in the planning and implementation of these programs

      • The best programs cost money

      • Weekend retreat formats were very popular

      • Effective programs usually involved small groups and experience-based learning of an interpersonal and problem-solving nature with the theory and lecture kept to a minimum.

      • Feedback sessions where participants were permitted to react to the program were very beneficial.
