  2. Course structure • Unit 1:Listening to and Appraising Music: 20% • Unit 2:Composing and Appraising Music: 20% • Unit 3:Performing Music: 40% • Unit 4:Composing Music: 20% = 100%

  3. UNIT 1: 20%Listening to & Appraising Music • Written exam (1 hour): based on CD of musical extracts • Questions: • Listen to musical extracts, and appraise them. • Musical extracts cover a broad range of styles. • All questions and musical examples based on…

UNIT 2: Composing and Appraising Music – 20% Requirement = • 10% = 1 x Composition that… • Explores 2 or more of the 5 areas of study. • Links to 1 of 3 strands – • 10% = An appraisal the process and product • Composition is completed entirely within 20 hours of controlled time, • Appraisal is completed within 2 hours of controlled time (exam conditions!) Externally assessed

UNIT 3: 40%Performing Music 2 Assessed Performances: • Solo: • Can be acoustic, or technology based • Can be accompanied by piano, guitar, backing track, etc • Performances are recorded & don’t have to be public performances • Ensemble: • Must have two or more live players. You must have a unique part within it • Can include musicians from outside the class, or even from outside school • Ensemble: Internally assessed; externally moderated.

UNIT 4: 20%Composing Music Requirement = 1 x free composition • Use any style of your choice. • Must explore 2 or more of the 5 Areas of Study. • Must submit: • Composition (written score or annotation) • Recording of the composition (can be performed by anybody or by computer!) Internally assessed; externally moderated.
