  1. Oral Commentary: What works as an organizing principle?

  2. I found it really interesting that the first time I read this poem I thought it meant one thing, but after awhile, I started to realize that it meant something totally opposite. The form of this poem fits the meaning. The true role of women’s contributions to history is hidden from casual observers who don’t look very closely. From the Practice Round Opening Claim Theme Behind It

  3. I found it really interesting that the rhetorical purpose of the speaker of this poem is totally different from the rhetorical purpose of the author. People can fool themselves in dramatic ways about what is real and what is right—especially when they have no self-concept. From the Practice Round Opening Claim Theme Behind It

  4. I found it really interesting that the rhetorical purpose of the speaker of this poem is totally different from the rhetorical purpose of the author. This narrator is trying to convince herself that she has power over a situation and over her own behavior, when in truth, she has no power at all. From the Practice Round Opening Claim Theme Behind It

  5. The author’s rhetorical purpose is to show us two different women, one who seems to have a good life and one who does not. Whether or not women manage to transcend traditional roles, they are not likely to gain the kind of power over their own lives that men have, and so they are not likely to live meaningful and fulfilling lives. From the Practice Round Opening Claim Theme Behind It

  6. Ways to Begin • Statement of Rhetorical Purpose • Statement of what you find interesting • Statement of why the poem or extract is important • But ALL of those things are a way of getting to the one important thing:

  7. What KNOWLEDGE is contained in this work?

  8. Other ways to think about it… • Why should someone read this work? • What can someone learn from reading this text? • What important idea about being human is contained in this text? • How do I view the world differently now that I’ve read this text? • How was my understanding of human nature clarified or expanded or refined because I read this text?
