  1. Gabriel Dumont Gabriel Dumont is my great greatgreat cousin. He was born in 1837 in Saskatchewan. He was a great hunter, bowsman and horse rider. In 1862, Gabriel moved to Batoche, Manitoba and became the chief of the Metis band. My Dad’s whole family came from Batoche.

  2. Gabriel Dumont was not able to read or write but spoke 6 languages. Gabriel was the Lois Riels military commander. The Metis people rebelled against the Canadian government that was trying to take land and buffalo hunting rights from the Metis people.

  4. Gabriel and Lois Riel set up an small army of 300 men to defend the buffalo hunting lines in the Batoche boundaries. They defeated the Canadian army at Duck Lake and Fish Creek but they did not have enough guns and men to win at Batoche.
