  3. Goal for year • Continuous improvement and effectiveness of AVID program via- • Quality curriculum and instruction • Data collection to inform and guide • Quality tutorials on a regularly scheduled basis

Program Development • The Major Players • School Administration- • Knowledge and support of all aspects is mandatory • Counseling office • Elective teacher • Students • Tutors • Faculty/site team • Enrollment in Advanced Classes • Strategies and barriers • Site Team • Must be interdisciplinary ( English, Social Studies, Math, Science) and include administrator, counselor • Work toward including Advanced Content and AP Teachers • Meet quarterly (minimum) and assign roles, responsibilities

AVID Elective Teacher: • Implements AVID curriculum, including standards, WICR and binders • Develops the academic and personal strength of AVID students • Ensures students are enrolled in college prep classes • Becomes a master of the stages of the AVID tutorial and the inquiry learning process and coaches teachers/tutors • Supports colleagues to implement AVID methodologies schoolwide • Implements the AVID Program so that it aligns with the 11 Essentials

AVID Students: • are actively involved in their own education and grow academically and personally through the support of the AVID program. • are enrolled in advanced/college prep classes. • become thoroughly grounded in AVID strategies (WICR: writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading). • develop personal pride in themselves and their work. • develop and foster dispositions of academic success in themselves and their classmates. • become masters of each stage of the AVID tutorial and the inquiry learning process

AVID Facilitators (tutors): • Facilitates Tutorial Sessions • Uses appropriate assigned teaching materials. • Monitors and documents student progress. • Increases college awareness and readiness. • Communicates with teachers and instructional leaders as appropriate. • Assists with study, note-taking and test preparation skills in all subject areas. • Serves as student mentor and role model. • Reviews student binders as needed (does not grade). • Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance. • Participates in scheduled training sessions. • Completes necessary paperwork.

Data: AVID Reporting Requirements • Site Team Plan: Due September 16 (ALP Office) • Site Team Updated on MyAVID.org: September 16 (AVID.org) • ISS Due: November 16 (AVID.org) • General Data Due: November 30 (AVID.org) • CSS Due: 2 weeks before your CSS visit (AVID.org) • Senior Data Due: April 30 (AVID.org) Cobb County due dates differ from those posted on the AVID website

Data: Cobb Reporting Requirements • How do we know the AVID is affecting student achievement? • Student data • Middle school • High school • What is available now? • What needs to be collected? • How do AVID students compare with the rest of the student body? • What is the most effective way of collecting and presenting data?

  12. Tutorials – the backbone of support • Tutors hired and begin in September • Quality tutorials are held on a regularly scheduled basis • No excuses mentality for all sessions • Students • Teachers • Tutors • School

AVID Students in the Tutorial Process • Comes prepared with a completed AVID tutorial form. • Works at board presenting his/her question to group as tutor takes Cornell notes. • Shares prior knowledge with group and uses group member questions to assist in working toward a solution. • Presents higher-level question based on classroom performance in core subject areas. • Records own and group thinking on board. • Studies using strategies learned in AVID class.

AVID Teacher in Tutorials • Coaches students and tutors in the tutorial process. • Coachesstudents/tutors to share responsibility for monitoring their own/each other’s behavior. • Conducts a tutorial session if tutorial groups are larger than 1:7 • Rotates to observe/monitor each group during the period. • Models higher-level questioning; validates students who ask higher level questions. • Ensures tutorials are conducted with fidelity.

The AVID Tutor: • Coaches and works with one group the entire period. • Sits with the tutorial group and away from the student presenter. • Facilitates the group and pushes the thinking of all students to a higher level. • Takes Cornell notes for the student presenter and models Cornell note taking for the group of students

The AVID Tutor, continued: • takes an active part in developing the academic and personal strength of AVID students. • becomes thoroughly grounded in AVID strategies (WICR) • becomes a master of each stage of the AVID tutorial and the inquiry learning process • assists AVID students in developing personal pride. • serves as a role model/mentor to AVID students. • are expected to be active learners, not content experts.

Schedules • Schools are given budgets based on the number of AVID sections • Schedule tutorials 2 times per week • May use 1-2 of your hours for binder check assistance (tutors are NOT to be solely responsible for binders if this is part of the AVID grade) • May have tutorials ANY day of the week: school choice • Work with surrounding schools to share tutors • Do not schedule tutors during the last week of the semester, first week of second semester, or during the week of testing • Tutorial Observations will take place this year

  23. Facilitator hiring • Job Posting: • Each AVID site places a posting in the CCSD STAR system. The school secretary will provide assistance with this process. • Schools may NOT hire AVID facilitators (this includes re-hiring last year’s tutor) unless they have posted a position • Contact katherine.williams@cobbk12.org for a list of trained facilitators • Hiring: • Principal and/or designee reviews cleared applications online. Note: Schools are not to interview candidates until their applications appear on STAR. • When hiring, submit an Employee Action Form (EAF) to HR. • Indicate amount facilitator is to be paid in the Comments section. • When at all possible, hire an experienced facilitator • Facilitators are not cleared to work with students until they complete the first module of training and turn in the Authorization to Report Form to the appropriate school personnel. • Email the name of your facilitator to Katherine Williams.

Pay and Budgets Amount they are paid per hour • New Facilitator:$9.10 per hour • Trained Facilitator: $14.25 per hour Amount to take out of your AVID Budget per hour • New Facilitator: $9.83 • Trained Facilitator: $15.40 • Funds will be provided by semester. • Tutorials are a requirement of the AVID program – plan to spend ALL of your funds. • Be sure to keep track of your tutor budget. The ALP office does not have funds to cover any overages.
