  2. Project Goals • Identify future standardisation needs for ICT in order to create an information society that is accessible for all • Propose a standardisation workplan, wrt WI, lead responsibility, timeframe & priority

  3. Project Deliverables • Executive Summary Report - a Work Programme for Design for All in ICT standardisation • Main report - state of art, analysis, reference

  4. Design for All • Design for All is the intervention on environments, products and services with the aim that everybody, including future generations, independently of age, sex, capacities or culture can enjoy participating in the building of society.

  5. Project Team Members • Research • Sintef • C-LAB • Industry • Siemens • British Telecom • User Organisations • - Swedish Handicap I. • - CRID /EIDD • - ANEC • Consultants • - Clas Thoren Consulting • - Human Factors Solutions

  6. Domains of ICT • Communication devices • Digital Broadcasting • Wayfinding • Internet & EC • Information Appliances • Personal Computers • Public Access Terminals • Services • Smart Cards • Smart Houses

  7. Executive Summary Project Leader Adam Balfour Human Factors Solutions

  8. Generic recommendations • General • Location/access • Hardware • Interoperability • User interface - Icons, symbols pictograms • User profiling • Safety and Security

  9. General - 1 • Need holistic approach to issue - avoid piecemeal • Improve co-operation - research / standards • Evaluate alternative strategies - business adoption DFA • Review domain specific DFA guidelines - create generic

  10. General - 2 • Adapt design process related standards -DFA • Adapt usability standards - DFA • Adapt user interface principles standards • Develop Codes of Practice - ethical issues • Develop legislation & standards for cost transparency • Develop follow up plan for project

  11. Location / Access • Identification & location of mobile devices • Identification & location ICT service points • Review/adapt standards accessibility - all modes

  12. Hardware • CWA/ guidelines - layout & identification of key functions • Develop legislation/ safety standards - colour coding of ICT products, systems, functions. (x-ref Icons, +++)

  13. Interoperability • Review, adapt, apply standards for communication protocols between ICT & Assistive Technology • As above for Hardware interfaces - ICT & AT • Open standard - dynamically configurable networks • Develop standards for coding of data to be communicated between ICT devices and assistive technology NB All Ind. Agreements/CWAs

  14. User Interface • Review/adapt office standards WRT home / DFA • metaphors, navigation, principles, usability • Develop /adapt guidelines for verbal messages- • structure, form & presentation • Code of Practice for multimodal interaction • Standards for minimum help facilities • Standards for dialogue sequences -PATs • Standards for legible user interfaces - intermodal

  15. Icons symbols & pictograms • Review existing standards, inc. for development & testing and in different modes • Determine list of functions to be represented • Define functional description • Develop rules set for icons • Develop - ISO 9186, ISO 3461 • Develop intermodal - earcons, etc.

  16. User profiling/adaptable UI • Identify requirements for coding in several domains • Identify requirements WRT services • Examine “smart function” - identify requirements, code • Code environments (home, office, mobile, ++) • User to choose coding WRT services and set limits • Stds. for portability of and open protocols for user profiling • Revise 1332-4 to include input from above • Establish repository of coded requirements

  17. Safety & Security • Review/adapt legislation & stds for giving/ receiving emergency info.- accessible to all people/ modalities • Review/adapt stds for emergency procedures- accessible to all people/ modalities • Review/ adapt legislation & standards to ensure privacy / security of information • Develop standards for identification via chosen method • Develop standards for alarms, hierarchy, presentation

  18. Work Programme • Source • Work item proposal • Which body (help from ICTSB) • Priority • Timeframe

  19. Way Ahead • Establish follow up group/team - under ICTSB / CEN ISSS / Commission ? • Need relevant legal, technical & standards expertise. • Tasks • Sort WI relative to TC´s, initiate x-org. work, present, get commitment, monitor, report back. Update Workplan.
