  3. Problem Finding: The Next Level • Is there thinking beyond the formal stage? • A fifth stage is sometimes discussed in psychology • _____________________________ • Problem finding stage • A type of thinking that requires us to discover problems that have yet to be identified • To formulate these problems • And to begin questioning these problems • Awareness of contradictions

  4. Memory • Memory as Information Processing • similar to a computer • write to file • save to disk • read from disk • _______________________ • the processing of information into the memory system • i.e., extracting meaning

  5. Memory • ______________________ • the retention of encoded information over time • ______________________ • process of getting information out of memory • Video

  6. Declines in Memory • In general declines in memory are apparent throughout development. • More specifically declines in sensory memory are more apparent • ____________________________________________ • Followed by visual memory • Auditory memory maintains well with the greatest declines after 50. • Long term memory is often affected as well • Age However is not always the best correlate of these declines…many other factors play a role in these declines.

  7. How’s Your Memory • Which way does Hamilton face on the ten dollar bill? • Right or Left? • How about Washington on the one dollar bill? • Right or Left?

  8. How Do Older Adults Perform on Tests? • First of all what’s the difference between recall and recognition? • ________________________________________________________________________________________ • Recall scores decline with age.

  9. Alzheimer’s Disease • Video 1 • Video 2 • Video 3 • Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia. This incurable, degenerative, and terminal disease was first described by German psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer in 1906 and was named after him. • Generally it is diagnosed in people over 65 years of age, although the less-prevalent early-onset Alzheimer's can occur much earlier. • An estimated _______ million people worldwide had Alzheimer's in 2006; this number may quadruple by 2050
