3. Gampaha District –Sri Lanka Administrative Unit in close proximity to Colombo
Approximate population 2.3 million
Second highest population in a district
Curative sector-3 General Hospitals 5 District Hospitals and Central Dispensaries
Preventive Sector -16 MOH areas
4 large Export Processing Zones where 80,000 young people are employed
4. Approximately 80,000 employees were working in factories of industrial zones in our district
5. Key Drivers and Initiatives Need assessment was carried out and evaluation done regarding the working population of our district
60,000 young employees were working in 60 factories in the largest zone-Katunayake
More than 80% were internal migrants living with limited facilities
Health facilities were provided (ad-hoc) by private sector health care providers
Reproductive Health issues were identified as priority issues
Initiatives were taken to establish a special MOH area to provide comprehensive health care to working population in our country
6. Main Obstacles and barriers There were no or poor coordination at the very beginning with the health sector
Factory management were reluctant to give us entry into their premises
They perceived it as a unnecessary burden to their work
No additional budgets were available at the beginning
7. History of establishing a MOH office in Katunayake Free Trade Zone
We were able to establish a special MOH area to provide comprehensive health care to working population in the largest export processing zone
Health Care Unit was established in the second largest export processing zone in Biyagama

Health Promotion
First Aid training and training regarding Blood Borne Diseases and their Prevention
Work Place safety and matters pertaining to Occupational Health

12. Healthy work place and occupational health As we have 5 large export processing zones we initiated the “Healthy Work Place” concept and performed basic evaluation of
Occupational hazards
Health and safety risks
Occupational hygiene
Ergonomics
Gender issues
Underage labour
13. Occupational Health and work place safety-District level programs Advocacy Program on occupational Health and safety conducted by the Occupational Health Unit of the Ministry of Health for factory managers and the safety officers
Conducted by the Consultants of the Ministry of Health
Basic components of the Occ.Health prog.was discussed and formation of safety committees were discussed.
14. Occupational Health..contd Second meeting with the factory managers , safety officers and some supervisors was held in Oct 2009
Training on some of the components of Occ.Health were done on the same day
Training of Public Health Inspectors
Training of Medical personnel and staff members at various levels
15. Advocacy Meetings-We were the first to start occupational health unit in Sri Lanka

We have mainly focused on statistics regarding mortality and morbidity
