  3. Current Crisis • The current status of the infrastructure in Bangladesh is the main prevention of Bangladesh’s economic growth. • Long years of under-investment has taken a toll and has resulted in the poor access to basic infrastructure for a large portion of Bangladesh’s large population. • Lack of well designed policies, legal and regulatory frame work, and the inability of private agencies are also a reason to why Bangladesh has a poor infrastructure.

We have chosen important fields that make up the infrastructure of Bangladesh and commented on them as we feel these are the important aspects that make up the infrastructure of Bangladesh. • Electricity • Transport • Telecommunications • Industry • Archeological Sight

  5. Electricity in Bangladesh • Bangladesh currently faces a major electricity crises. • The reasons to why Bangladesh has a shortage of Electricity is because power plants were formed under donor pressure and could never reach the expectations required. • Much of the power plants over the last 15 years has been donor driven and has, thus, remained insensitive to the political realities of the country. • Malfunctions and insufficient capacity also lead to the shortage of Electricity. • Corruption also plays a major role in Bangladesh’s electricity crisis and disputes between companies also cause the shortage of Electricity. • Only 16% of Bangladesh’s population has access to electricity.

  6. Transport • Having an Adequate and efficient transport system is the key to initializing and sustaining economic development. As having faster trade and transport would lead to a better economy. • Bangladesh’s transport system consists of roads, railways, inland waterways, sea ports and airports both domestic and international. • Presently there are 21,000 km of roads, 2706 km of railroads, 4000km of water ways, 2 international airports situated in Chittagong and Dhaka, and 8 domestic Airports. • Since independence transport has improved immensely although set backs have occurred. • Further development of transport is constrained by terrain and constant flooding and poor maintenance with low investments.

  7. Telecommunications • Telecommunications has improved immensely in Bangladesh. With a growing market it networks communication has improved. • Bangladesh has full access to the internet but doesn’t have high speed connections. • Although improvements have been made in this sector still only 1 person per 100 people in Bangladesh has access to a phone.

Industry • Although the industry of Bangladesh is pretty small it contributes significantly to the exports of the country. • It also provides employment. • Major products are jute, cotton textile, and other agricultural products. • Since the 1980 it has started the export of ready made garments to the US and the market has grown rapidly. • Bangladesh is the fifth largest supplier of cotton to the world. • EPZ have also been created in Bangladesh • Other industries include sugar, tea, leather goods, and pharmaceuticals and fertilizers.

This 7th century archaeological find covers approximately an area of 27 acres of land.

  11. Lalbagh Fort • Lalbagh FortThe capital city Dhaka predominantly was a city of the Mughals. The fort occupies the south western part of the old city, overlooking the Buriganga as a silent sentinel of the old city. 14. Conclusion • In conclusion we would like to state that Bangladesh’s infrastructure overall is very poor as it is usually below average standards. Corruption and a faulty governments are the set backs from the improvement of this country. Not all the population has access to infrastructure which is a major issue. Improvements and progress has been made but it is still a long way to go to reach the average standards.
