  1. The Development of Travel Agents L.O: to understand the different types of travel agents; To describe the growth of ‘multiples’; To state the products and services offered.

  2. The first Travel Agencies • Thomas Cook is often called the ’Father of Tourism’ as he was the first to offer package holidays, and was the first tour operator and travel agent. • As well as Thomas Cook other people set up travel agencies in the late 19th Century, such as Dean and Dawson (which was absorbed into Thomas Cook in 1960) and Sir Henry Lunn (whose company was merged into Lunn Poly, the UK travel agency arm of TUI). !!EXAMPLE OF MULTIPLES GROWING!!

  3. Travel Agents • In 1926, Thomas Cook opened its headquarters in the very fashionable Berkeley Street in London. Because travel was expensive for the first half of the 20th Century, travel agents were rare, and tended to exist only in wealthy areas where people could afford to go on holidays. • However from the 1950s travel became more accessible and popular and so travel agents began to grow. In the second half of the 20th Century it was not unusual for there to be several travel agents on every UK High Street.

  4. 4 TYPES • Multiples – (you must explain the growth of these on your poster – LINK TO LARGER TRAVEL AGENTS BUYING OUT SMALLER TRAVEL AGENTS, OR MERGERS BETWEEN 2 OR MORE COMPANIES) • Miniples • Independent • Online Look at page 10 of the text book – what do each of these mean? Can you name at least 1 example of each?

  5. Leisure and Business There are 2 main types of travel agents – Leisure Travel Agents, and Business Travel Agents.

  6. Leisure • Leisure travel agents are usually found in the shopping centres and High Streets of UK towns and cities. Their customers are leisure tourists – most of whom are booking all-inclusive holidays, and will need advice on the destination and the components of the holiday. Examples of Leisure travel agents include Thomas Cook, First Choice and Co-operative Travel.

  7. Business • Business travel agents handle and manage the travel accounts of businesses. Most business travellers will book by either phone or email and so business travel agents do not need the highly visible shops like leisure travel agents. Examples of business travel agents include Wayte Travel Management and Portman Travel.

  8. Suggested websites to look at products and services offered (or look at page 22 of text book) • BUSINESS www.portmantravel.com • BUSINESS www.waytetravel.co.uk • LEISURE www.thomascook.com • LEISURE www.cooptravel.co.uk LIST SOME OF THE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES EACH TYPE OFFER ON YOUR POSTER
