  1. Colonial American Timeline The events of the colonials are a very important part of America’s history. The details of it’s discovery, colonizers, and expansion will be presented in this timeline. The blending of culture, religion, and the strive for freedom helped shaped this free country we live in. America

  3. Timeline • 1000*: A.D. Vikings discover the New World. • 1215: Magna Carta is signed. • 1300*: Vikings abandon settlement due to a cooling period known as the Little Ice Age. • 1492: Columbus “rediscovers” the New World in the Santa Maria thinking it is a Japanese island. • 1497: John Cabot explores North America and claims the Atlantic Coast for England. • 1499: Amerigo Vespucci sails near the South American Coast. • 1507: The name America is used by a German mapmaker. • 1513: Juan Ponce de Leon explores Florida. • 1517: Martin Luther starts the Reformation in Germany that spreads across Europe. • 1519-1521: Magellan goes on a voyage around the world. • 1534: King Henry VIII split from the Roman Catholic Church. • 1541: Hernando de Soto discovers the Mississippi River. • 1565: St. Augustine is founded as the first European settlement. • 1584: Sir Walter Raleigh sends the first English expedition to America. • 1587: Virginia Dare is the first English child born in America. • 1604: Acadia is settled by the French. • 1607: Jamestown is founded as the first successful English settlement. • 1608: Champlain establishes Quebec. • 1609: Henry Hudson discovers the Hudson River. • 1611: Tobacco is first grown in Virginia. • 1614: The Dutch settle in New York. The Dutch name it New Netherlands. • 1619: Colonists in Jamestown assemble for the first time. Slaves are first sold in Virginia. • 1620: Mayflower lands at Cape Cod with 101 colonists. The Mayflower Compact is signed. The first republican form of government in America was established at Plymouth. • 1623: New Hampshire is settled. New Amsterdam is settled. • 1624: Dutch colonists land in what is now New York. Virginia was made into a royal colony. • 1626: Peter Minuit, director and general of New Netherland, bought Manhattan Island from the Native Americans for $24. • 1630: John Winthrop & 900 Puritans land in New England. Boston is established. • 1634: Maryland is settled, largely by Catholics, with 200 colonists. • 1635: Connecticut is settled by immigrants from Massachusetts. • 1636: Harvard College is founded. • 1636: Roger Williams founds Rhode Island and its capital, Providence. • 1637: Pequot War outbreak and negro slaves first used in New England.

Timeline • 1638: Swedes settle in Delaware. • 1639: The first constitution is made in Connecticut. • 1641: Slavery becomes legal in New England. • 1649: The Toleration Act is passed in Maryland. • 1651: The First Navigation Act is passed by Parliament. It stated that you could not trade with England in non English ships. • 1652: Rhode Island makes slavery illegal. • 1655: Stuyvesant conquers the Swedish in Delaware. • 1656: Quakers expelled from Massachusetts. • 1662: Connecticut is granted a charter • 1663: The charter for Rhode Island and the Carolinas is granted. • 1664: The Dutch’s New Netherland becomes the English’s New York. • 1670: Charleston, South Carolina is settled. • 1676: Kin Phillip’s War erupts between New England colonists and the Indians. Bacon’s Rebellion begins in Virginia. • 1681: William Penn receives a land grant and a royal charter to start Pennsylvania. • 1682: William Penn establishes Philadelphia. French explorer La Salle explores the southern Mississippi and names the area Louisiana, after King Louis XIV. • 1689-1697: King William’s War is fought at ended with the Treaty of Ryswick.. • 1690: King Williams War continues with the English and the French, and spills over to the colonies. In February, Schenectady, New Yorkwas burned by the French with help from Native Americans. • 1691: Massachusetts gets a royal charter with a royal governor and a governor’s council. • 1692: The Salem Witch Trials break out in Massachusetts. Between June and September,150 people were accused, with 20 of them, 14 women, executed. By October, the hysteria subsides, and the remaining prisoners are released. • 1693: The college of William and Mary is founded in Williamsburg, Virginia. • 1699: Williamsburg becomes the colonial capital of Virginia. • 1701: Yale is established. • 1702-1714: Queen Anne’s War is fought and is ended with the Treaty of Utrecht. • 1717: The French settle New Orleans. • 1733: Georgiais settled by James Oglethorpe. • 1744-1748: King George’s War is fought and ended with the Treaty of Aix-La-Chapelle. • 1754: French and Indian war begins with the attack on Fort Duquesne. A colonial congress met at Albany, New York to make a union of all the colonies to defend against the oncoming attacks from the French and Indians. • 1756: William Pitt’s System is adopted by the British helping them win the fourth and final inter-colonial war against the French.

  5. Timeline • 1763: Treaty of Paris ends the French And Indian War and everything east of the Mississippi River is give to Britain except for New Orleans. Louisiana Territory is given to Spain. Florida is given to Britain in exchange for Cuba. • 1763: Proclamation of 1763 prohibiting settling past the Appalachians. • 1764: Sugar Act passed putting tax on sugar, molasses, indigo, silks, etc.. • 1765: Quartering Act and Stamp Act passed by Parliament. • 1767: Townshend Acts of 1767 are passed putting taxes on glass, paper, lead, and tea. • 1770: The Boston Massacre occurs. • 1773: Tea Act is passed giving the East India Company control over tea. The Boston Tea Party is held. • 1774: The Intolerable Acts are passed. The First Continental Congress is held. • 1775: Revolutionary War begins. The Second Continental Congress is held. • 1783: The war ends with the Treaty of Paris giving all land east of the Mississippi River to the new United States of America. • *Dates are approximate.
