  1. ATSC TSG/S13 Chairman’s Reporton theSRM Carriage Activity TSG/S13 Doc. 348R1 31 May 2006 Michael Dolan Chair, S13 31 May 2006

  2. Note • This is a report from the chairman of ATSC TSG/S13 providing a status of the SRM work activity. This report is not a recommendation from the ATSC, nor is it a consensus output of any ATSC subcommittee or group.

  3. Project Statement • “Undertake work to define a System Renewability Message (SRM) carriage mechanism, in the form of an informational document or recommended practice, utilizing the existing ATSC Private Data carriage. Non-private data methods may be considered if private data is shown to be insufficient.”

  4. History • Project approved in December • S13 work started in January • RFI issued in February • 3 technical proposals received • Evaluation underway

  5. Scope • The project is to define the encapsulation in the ATSC Transport Stream only. How the SRMs get into the transport or how they are processed is not in scope • However, informative models are assumed on either side to assist in validating the design: • Insertion Model • Acquisition Model • Feedback is solicited on these models that follow

  6. Insertion Model SRM Provider A SRM Payload Preparation/Aggregation SRM Encapsulator ATSC Mux ATSC Decoder Internet or Private Network ATSC TS SRM Provider C SRM Provider B

Note: Some ATSC receivers are embedded within HD displays and do not use external digital interfaces and the associated CPSs.

  8. The Proposals • Proposal summary • New table section (MPEG, Part 1) • A/97 application (MPEG, Parts 1 & 6) • IPMP application (MPEG, Parts 1 & 11) • No evidence that any fail to meet the requirements

  9. New Table Section • Defines a new MPEG-2 systems private section (13818-1) • Long form table • MPEG CA_system_id code point used to discriminate sections and SRM providers • Signaling either through Conditional Access Table (CAT) or using a fixed PID (not yet decided)

  10. A/97 Application • A/97 - ATSC Software Download Service • Builds on MPEG-2 DSM-CC data carousel (13818-6) • IEEE Organization Unique Identifier (OUI) code point used to discriminate data carousel modules (per 13818-6) • Signaling with PSIP service_type=5 and DSM-CC messages

  11. IPMP Application • IPMP – Intellectual Property Management and Protection • Builds on IPMP over MPEG-2 (13818-11) • MPEG CA_system_id and IPMP ToolID code points used to discriminate the table sections per 13818-11 • Signaling with CAT per 13818-11

  12. Evaluation • Evaluation criteria • Simplicity • Efficiency (i.e. bandwidth) • Use of existing standards • Flexibility (e.g. future SRM kinds and sizes) • ATSC design practice (e.g. long form tables) • Additional criteria being considered for: • Decoder acquisition model • Encoder insertion model

  13. Status and Next Steps • RFI issued 30-May seeking input on the code point usage • Continue with evaluation criteria • Select design proposal • Draft document • Make recommendation to TSG in September
