Columbus State to offer degree leading to career in cloud computing By Jennifer Smola March 6, 2019 A new two-year degree at Columbus State Community College aims to have more students “reaching for the cloud.” The new associate of applied science degree in software development will offer a path to employment in cloud computing, the college said Tuesday. The program will be developed in partnership with Northern Virginia Community College and Amazon Web Services Educate, the academic arm of Amazon Web Services (AWS) for information technology and cloud education resources. Columbus State has been awarded a nearly $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to create the curriculum. The program will be designed to coordinate with AWS certification exams and other credentials in the IT industry.

  10. Scaling Successful Models

  12. Scaling Successful Models

  13. National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE-CDE) • The National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sponsors two types of Centers of Academic Excellence (CAE): one in Cyber Defense and one in Cyber Operations. • Columbus State has been designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education through academic year 2024 for the AAS in Computer Science with a major in Cybersecurity.

  14. Incumbent Workforce: IT Certificates • Over the last two years, we have co-designed incumbent employer IT upskilling curriculum with Nationwide Financial, leading to a pilot for information technology workers that provides on-the-job education to update technical skills into rapidly changing, in-demand fields such as data analytics. • We have piloted the certificates to nearly 100 employees and refined the program for improvements, and we are now in the process of adding additional employee cohorts for Nationwide Financial in Des Moines, Iowa. • We are leveraging this work to expand these certificates to first-level employees at JPMorgan Chase who are in jobs at risk of disruption to take them from a $45,000/year job to a $75,000/year job, increasing their stability and economic mobility. • In both cases, our IT certificate curriculum and incumbent worker talent development models were developed with scale in mind, with a near-term goal of tripling the numbers of incumbent worker IT certificate completions across Nationwide Financial and JPMorgan Chase; and we know that this is still not enough to fully take this approach to scale.

  15. Transitional Workforce: Amazon Career Choice Model • Over the past year, Columbus State and Amazon Career Choice have co-created a regional employer partnership model which will provide Amazon Career Choice participants with defined ladders of opportunity for fulfillment center employees to education and career off-ramps to high paying jobs; both while they are employed at Amazon and after they gain employment at one of our regional healthcare, IT, or advanced manufacturing employers. • This model will be used as one of the signature talent development pipeline strategies for the National BRT work in the Columbus region, and there are active discussions at JPMorgan Chase and at Amazon Career Choice in using this model to scale beyond Columbus, using Columbus State as the workforce education partner. • With JPMorgan Chase as our signature development partner and as a result of the National Business Roundtable employer input, we are in the process of developing a Digital Technology Certificate for individuals without formal technology education to advance fulfillment center employees into a tech-driven career pathway. This certificate will serve as the global skills foundation from which participants can develop further expertise in software development, cybersecurity, or data analytics. This model was developed in partnership with Amazon Career Choice leaders and has been well-received as a benchmark.
