  2. What is nosocomial infections ? • “Hospital-acquired infections”: • infections acquired during hospital care which were not present or incubating at admission.

Incidence of HAI’s • In 2002 approximately 1.7 million cases of infection. • 33,269 among newborns in high-risk nurseries (1.95%) • 19,059 among newborns in well-baby nurseries (1.12%) • 417,946 among adults and children in ICUs (24.58%) • 1,266,851 among adults and children outside of ICUs (72.32%)

Deaths related to HAI’s • The estimated deaths associated with HAIs in U.S. hospitals were 98,987 • 35,967 were for pneumonia (36.33%) • 30,665 for bloodstream infections (30.97%) • 13,088 for urinary tract infections (13.22%) • 8,205 for surgical site infections (8.28%) • 11,062 for infections of other sites (11.17%)
