The Renaissance began once Europeans found they could begin trading with the East. • This led to population growth and better education. • In 1517, reformation occurred when Martin Luther debated some of the beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church. • These ideas pushed for others to think boldly and question common practices.   9. First to travel from Europe to China by ship was Marco Polo. • Prince Henry of Portugal set up a school and naval observatory. • In 1491, Amerigo Vespucci arrived in Central America. • On August 3, 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail with 90 men. Age of Exploration

The three ships that his men travelled on were the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. • Thought he was in the Indies of Asia. • Wanted to convert Native Americans to Christianity, but it turned into slavery. • Began a trade exchange of plants and animals with Native Americans and became known as the Columbian Exchange.
