  2. Introductions… Mr. Ackerman Ms. Brown Ms. Caronna Ms. Case Ms. Davis Ms. Hackney Ms. Myers

  3. Homework Monday through Thursday nights Shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes to complete for 2nd Graders Language Arts and Math Your child’s teacher gave you (or will give you) more information on their individual homework

  4. Being A reader & being a writer • Reading: Program implemented for K-2 • Focuses on teaching students to read well and to love reading! • Whole-class Instruction focuses on word study and developing independent work habits. • Small-Group Work consists of differentiated reading instruction in small groups. • Provides rigorous instruction in early literacy skills and strategies, including reading comprehension, fluency, phonics and decoding, and high-frequency words. • Writing: Continuation from the Being a Writer program in 1st Grade • Develops students’ ability to write well in a variety of genres using a workshop model. • As students learn to think, talk, and share ideas, they come to value the thinking of others. • Students become thoughtful readers and writers and discuss big ideas with respect, clarity, and understanding.

  5. Word study Word Study: Students receive carefully constructed lists of words to examine and sort. Students will find words in their list(s) that are the same in some way and group them together – “sorting.” Instruction, practice, and assessment of these sorts will take place in class. Spelling is not graded at this point in the program.

  6. Guided Spelling Students develop into better spellers when they are guided to ‘think about’ spelling rather than memorize words from a list. The primary goal of Guided Spelling is to encourage the students to use spelling strategies to help them spell effectively. Spelling Tests will be introduced in weeks 12-24 of Word Study. At that point, words will be selected from the previous week’s instruction, then tests in weeks 25-29 focus on irregular high-frequency words.

  7. Accelerated reader (AR) We will have, and use, AR this year. More information to come from your child’s teacher and the Media Center. PLEASE remember that we need an Acceptable Use Procedure (AUP) signed from each parent/student prior to them using a device (home or school’s).

  8. 2nd Grade Team Webpage You will find important information regarding the entire 2nd grade team such as important dates, FYI’s, and forms for field trips or grade-level projects for you to print if needed. Please check this webpage often. The date the webpage is updated will be at the top. http://teachers.stjohns.k12.fl.us/pes-grade2/

  9. Please remember… School starts at 8:30 a.m. We start taking attendance and doing our lunch counts at that time. Dismissal is 2:50 p.m. except for Wednesday which is 1:50 p.m. Students cannot wear flip flops or backless shoes because of activity at PE and Recess daily. These types of shoes are a huge safety concern. Thank you!

  10. Thank you for coming and … … have a GREAT evening!!
