  10. Honor Graduates Academic Honor Graduate – District • Final top 10% of the graduating class. • Recognized with “Gold Cords” at graduation GPA will be printed in the GPA summary on student transcripts. SC schools use the GPA & rank from the SC UGP GPA column.

Honor Graduates Academic Achievement Honors Award - State • Complete 24 units of credit as prescribed • Receive a minimum grade of B for each semester course in grades 9 – 12 through seventh semester • SAT verbal score of 710 or math score of 690 or combined score of 1400 OR ACT English score of 30 or math score of 33 or composite of 31.

Some schools only consider 23 core classes (graduation requirements minus PE) when calculating your GPA. Other schools may look at grades for all of your classes.

College and Career Testing Military: Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) • Helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military • Even if not interested in a military career, ASVAB is an excellent career interest inventory We will give the ASVAB at BCHS on September 20, 2018, 8:15 am-9:15 am in the media center Career Readiness: ACT WorkKeys • Industry-recognized job skills assessment used nationwide • Ability to earn a National Career Readiness Certificate

College and Career Testing (Continued) 2-year Technical College: • Placement Test • consult your college in the Spring to schedule a testing date • Consult for acceptance of your SAT/ACT scores versus their required Placement Test (ACCUPLACER) 4-year College/University (BCHS CEEB Code: 410335) • Admissions Tests • SAT- Must register online at www.collegeboard.org • ACT - Must register online at www.actstudent.org Scores must be sent directly from the testing agency to your college. Fee waivers for SAT and/or ACT may be available for students receiving free or reduced price lunch who meet academic criteria.

  21. College Application Process 1. Get the APPLICATION: • Apply online at the college’s website. Most all colleges prefer this way, and some colleges waive the fee if you apply online. • Use Common Application or Coalition Application when applicable. They are available online at www.commonapp.org and http://www.coalitionforcollegeaccess.org/ 2. Request your Official Transcript (**if needed**) • Many schools ask you to self report your transcript and do not need an official transcript at the time of application. 4. Develop your ACTIVITIES RESUME • Email a copy to your counselor. • Update your resume when needed

  25. College Application Process (Cont’d) 5. Request at least two TEACHER RECOMMENDATIONS (if required) • Request recommendations at least 3 weeks prior to the application deadline. (The early the better) • Provide teachers with your resume (including all of your contact information, qualities, and accomplishments) • Fill out the student part of the teacher recommendation form • If you apply online, you MUST print the teacher recommendation forms. • Write the teacher a thank you note for taking the time to write the recommendation for you.

  26. College Application Process (Cont’d) 6. Write your ESSAY, if required • Proofread for spelling or grammar errors. Have another person also review the essay. • Include the essay with your completed application • Include your NAME & SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER on every page 7. Meet the DEADLINE.

College Application Day College Application Day is October 24, 2018, from 10:00am - 2:00 pm @ BCHS Complete any college applications you haven’t submitted by then with the help of your counselors and college admission representatives. Some colleges may waive application fees that day - ask your college if they will do this!

  28. 2-Year Colleges Midlands Technical College Senior Days Senior Day is a great way to get started on the Midlands Technical College admissions process. You will have a chance to speak with current students and a personal admissions advisor to learn more about MTC, and all attendees can apply to the college with their application fee waived. You must register to attend at https://www.midlandstech.edu/admissions/visit-campus • Friday, October 19th – Academic Center at the Airport Campus • Friday, November 16th – Academic Center at the Airport Campus • Friday, December 7th – Northeast Campus You must Sign up to attend. Technical schools require a high school diploma and placement test for admission.

General Eligibility Requirements SC HOPE, LIFE & Palmetto Fellows Scholarship SC Need-based Grant Lottery Tuition Assistance • US Citizen/Legal Permanent Resident* • SC Resident* • No felony convictions • No second or subsequent alcohol/drug misdemeanors • Not in default of any state or federal loans • Enroll in a degree-seeking program at an eligible SC institution *this must be determined at the time of high school graduation.

  34. 4-Year College Academic Criteria: Must meet at least 2 of the 3 criteria *cumulative GPA of 3.0 upon high school graduation *rank in the top 30% of the graduating class** *score at least 1100 on the SAT or 24 on the ACT 2-Year College Academic Criteria: *cumulative GPA of 3.0 (based on SC UGP) upon high school graduation Award Amount: up to $5000 per academic year NO APPLICATION **students graduating early (Dec) or in Summer School do not get ranked with their class and can only qualify with the test score and GPA criteria for 4-year institution eligibility

Academic Criteria: Must meet ALL criteria *score 1200 SAT or 27 ACT *earn 3.5 minimum GPA at the end of the Junior Year** *rank in the top 6% of the sophomore, junior, or graduating senior class OR *score 1400 on SAT or 32 ACT *earn a 4.0 GPA at the end of the Junior Year** **GPA requirement at the end of the Senior Year for final awards deadline Award Amount: up to $6700 Freshman year (sophomores, juniors, and seniors may earn up to $7500 per year)

HOPE Scholarship 4-year College: *one-year merit based for 1st time entering freshmen *only available at 4-year schools *3.0 Final GPA (but not eligible to receive LIFE) NO APPLICATION required. College will notify eligible students Award Amount: $2,800 toward cost of tuition Lottery Tuition Assistance Program 2-year College *only available at 2-year schools *must be degree seeking student taking at least six credit hours *must complete the FAFSA Award Amount: varies by funds available

SC Needs-Based Grant Provides additional financial assistance to South Carolina’s neediest students attending eligible SC public institutions. *Must complete the FAFSA each academic year. *Must be enrolled in college a minimum of six credit hours (if part-time) or twelve credit hours (if full-time) for the term Award Amount: Up to $2500/year for full-time students and up to $1250/year for part-time • May receive funds up to eight full-time equivalent terms of funding • Foster care youth may receive the maximum award in addition to need-based grant fund specifically for foster care youth. These youth must self-identify to the planned institution of attendance by May 1st.

  38. SC Tuition Grants Program Provides needs-based grant assistance to eligible South Carolina students attending eligible independent non-profit SC colleges. The application used to determine eligibility is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Must complete FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1st Award: Varies (depending on a combination of family resources, the cost of attendance of the independent college selected, and the final funding of the Tuition Grants Program by the State Legislature.) College Bound Student-Athletes NCAA Eligibility Center (Formerly NCAA Clearinghouse) • All athletes who intend to play Division I or II athletics must register with the NCAA. • Only courses that appear on your school’s list of NCAA Courses will be used in the calculation of the core GPA. Use the list as a guide. (CEEB Code = 410335) • You must submit your SAT/ACT score directly to the NCAA. Choose “9999” as one of the places to send your scores.
