In the past, it usually referred to those who travelled from less from less developed countries to big medical centers in developed countries for treatment which is unavailable at their home country. However in recent years it may equitably refer to those from developed countries who travel to developing countries for cheap priced medical treatments. The motivation may also for medical services which are unavailable or non-licensed in their home country. There are many differences between the medical agencies (FDA, EMA etc.), whether a drug is approved in their country or not. Several countries have their own review organizations in order to evaluate whether same therapy protocol would be “cost effective”. Medical tourism most often is for surgeries or other similar treatments. People also travel for dental tourism or fertility tourism. People who have rare conditions can travel to other countries
