The Buddha – Siddhartha Gautama • The Buddha was born into a wealthy family in India and could have been the leader of his people, but while traveling the countryside he was upset about the human suffering he saw: sickness, poverty and death. He left his home to search for a solution to human suffering. In order to do this he practiced…

  8. Know The Four Noble Truths • Life is full of pain and suffering. • Human desire causes this suffering. • By putting an end to desire, humans can end suffering. • Humans can end desire by following the Eightfold Path.

  10. Other Beliefs of Buddhism • Reincarnation – Belief that people are reborn after death

  11. Karma – What goes around comes around? • Karma is the belief that if someone does bad or good it comes back to them later in life.

  12. Nirvana • Nirvana is when one stops being reincarnated and becomes one with the universe. They must live an enlightened free of greed and hatred. They must also have good karma.

Activity: Read pages 86-89 in Enjoying Global History and answer the following questions • Why did Siddhartha leave his home and family? • How are Buddhists to achieve salvation, or nirvana • How are Buddhists to find the road to truth? • How can Buddhists find the Middle Way? • What did the Emperor Asoka do in order to follow Buddhist teachings in his own life?
