  1. Homework • R-2 due tomorrow • Next current events assignment due Tuesday, January 10 • Cumulative Quarterly Examination will be Friday, January 20 and Monday, January 23. • Friday: DBQ Essay on the Fall of the Roman Empire • Monday: 50 multiple choice questions on material from the first two quarters (early humans, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Ancient Hebrews, India, China, Greece, Rome). The last 10-12 will be on Rome.

  2. Recommendations for Social Studies 10H – What are they based on? • Grades: You must have a minimum of an A average (93) in the class. • Complete consistency at turning in high quality homework/current events/take home assignments on time. • Strong reading, writing and analytical skills. • Strong class participation • Maturity

  3. Thematic Introduction Feedback • Provide background information before the thesis. • Make sure the thesis is specific and contains reasons and examples to support your argument: • 3 Thesis: Classical Greece and the Han Dynasty had many achievements in culture and technology that continue to influence our world today. • 3.5 Thesis: Classical Greece and the Han Dynasty had many achievements in sports, philosophy, science, math, medicine and technology that continue to influence our world today. • 4 Thesis: The Han Dynasty had achievements during their golden age such as the Silk Road, the wheelbarrow and the stirrup, while Classical Greece had achievements such as the Olympics, medicine and the heliocentric theory. These achievements continue to influence the world we live in today. * Something that can be helpful in writing the thesis is to write very specific topic sentences for the body paragraphs first, and then combine them together to make the thesis. The thesis can always be more than one sentence!

  4. Thematic Body Paragraph Feedback • Don’t just provide a laundry list of facts and information. Use the facts and information you provide to thoroughly answer and analyze each part of the question being asked: • What were the achievements of each culture during its golden age. • How do these achievements influence our modern world? (some people did not devote enough attention to this part of the question). • All statements or arguments that you make need to be backed up with supporting details. • If you write something like “Socrates, Plato and Aristotle were great philosophers who influenced Ancient Greece with their ideas,” you need to back up that statement by explaining what some of their ideas were and why they were so influential. • Make sure to define any important vocabulary terms you bring up. • If you are going to make an argument about why the Silk Road contributed to the Han Dynasty’s golden age, make sure to briefly establish what the Silk Road was. • If you are going to make an argument that the scientific method invented by Aristotle contributed to Classical Greece’s golden age, make sure to briefly define what the scientific method is.

  5. General Tips • Don’t use the word “I” • Don’t write “as you can see” • When you have an opportunity to prepare an outline in advance, put as much time and effort into that as you can. • Pace yourself and proofread your work before you submit it.

  6. Current Events Feedback • For section 8: • If you are talking about how your predictions have changes, mention what your previous predictions were. • If you are making a connection to the curriculum, make sure it is specific. For example: • If you are talking about Syrian refugees, you can connect them to the Ancient Hebrews, who were forced to leave their homeland. • Modern day dictators like Bashar al-Assad (the leader of Syria) could be compared to brutal leaders we learned about in this class like Hammurabi, Qin Shi Huangdi, etc. • A leader being forced out of power (like the president of South Korea who is being impeached) could be compared to the Mandate of Heaven in China. • Articles about global trade could be connected to the Silk Road. • Proofread your work! Don’t forget the article!

  7. Examples • Migrant Crisis in Europe: • “Since the last migrant article I looked at, the situation has escalated into a rather large problem. My prediction from the last article has so far been accurate, which was that so many migrants would surge into Europe that the crisis would be left at a standstill. I predict soon that migrants from the non-war torn countries will soon be forced to no longer remain on the border, but rather return back home unless other parts of the world are willing to take them in.”
