  2. Aims • To know the format of the exam • To understand study techniques to aid revision • To identify target areas for revision

  3. Objectives • To understand the psychology of making lists • Engage in a strategy to overcome panic • Use memory friendly revision techniques • Be able to identify high yield information • Use revision MCQs effectively.

  4. Exam format • 200 questions over 3 hours • i.e just under 1 min per Question • Single best answer (SBA) • EMQ • Table/Algorithm • Picture format • Data interpretation • Seminal trial

  5. Core clinical medicine - 80% • Critical Appraisal and evidence based - 10% • Ethical and legal issues, organisational structure that supports UK general practice - 10%

  6. Retention of facts by modality of learning • Read 10% • Read and underline 20% • Hear 30% • Multimedia hear & read 60% • Teach someone else 90%

  7. Lists Memorising random numbers 7+-2. We remember the beginning and ends of lists best Environment influence (diving experiments) Can chunk things together to aid memory. Does this influence time spent revising one topic?

You will need to follow the links from RCGP website; Register with Oxford Journals, Present the last 8 digits of the 12 digit number starting 0000 from the insert with your address on your latest AIT journal. • NPEP question bank • Ask for free password from RCGP Scotland via their phone number on their website
