  2. Joseph Heller • Born in Brooklyn, New York • May 01, 1923 • Died December 12, 1999 • He loved to write as a child. • When he was 11, he wrote a story about the Russian invasion of Finland.

  3. Joseph Heller • After he graduated high school, he worked as a blacksmith’s apprentice, a messenger boy, and the filing clerk. • When he was 19, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. • He flew 60 combat missions as a bombardier in World War II.

  4. Facts • The original title of the book was Catch-18. • Leon Uris had a book coming out the same year called Mila 18. • Changed the name because he thought no one would want to read two books with the number 18 in the title in the same year.

  6. The Title • “There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one’s safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind.”

  8. Foundation • Setting: Toward the end of World War II in Pianosa, Italy. • Point of View: third person but focuses mostly on Yossarian and his emotions

Characters • Captain Yossarian- hates war, lead bombardier in his squadron, develops a fear that everyone is trying to kill him • Doc Daneeka- flight surgeon who fears flying so it makes the job difficult. Yossarian has to lie about his required amount of hours. • The Chaplain- visits all the patients in the ward and brings them things they need • Colonel Cathcart and Korn- has the say in the number of missions • Milo Minderbinder- brillant and insane, bombs own squadron • Major Major- laundry boy who became major after the other major died

Plot Summary • Yossarian is trying to stay in the hospital to avoid his number of missions being raised. • Yossarian has a fear of death and that people are trying to kill him. • He begins to ruin the missions as the number increases. Poisoning his squadrons food. • Yossarian is offered a way out of the war if he promotes the war back home and hides the truth of war. • Yossarian debates whether or not to take the deal because he knows the men in his squadron don’t deserve to do that many missions. • Yossarian leaves to go to Sweden in hope of freedom and he overcame his fear of dying by trying to paddle to Sweden.

Symbols • Number of missions- The number of missions will always be increased and it seems never ending. • Chocolate-covered cotton- They were surrounded with cotton and Milo tried to cover it with • Milo- sabotage and greediness • Major Major- loneliness, outcast • The soldier in white- inhumanity- no name, they don’t get personal

  12. Quotes • Opening line of the book- It was love at first sight. The first time Yossarian saw the chaplain he fell madly in love with him. • Doc Daneeka- “Catch-22. Anyone who wants to get out of combat duty isn’t really crazy.” • “Insanity is contagious.” Yossarian • “He was going to live forever, or die in the attempt.” • “I’ve been fighting all along to save my country. Now I’m gong to fight a little to save myself. The country’s not in danger any more, but I am.”
