Learning objectives: By the end of this presentation students will be able to: Define a learning objective Explain the difference between a good learning objective and a bad learning objective B) List the 6 items that need to be included on a presentation agenda C) List the 7 items that must be included during their 1st nations presentations D) List 3 possible ideas to use in their presentation

  5. What is a learning objective? • A learning objective is a goal you have for someone to learn. It is important that they are measurable. In other words, we must have a way to find out if we have achieved our learning goal. In order to do this we need to make sure our objectives are clear and specific.

  6. Consider the following examples: • Which one do you think is better, a or b? • Why? What are your reasons? (discussion) • A) By the end of the presentation students will be able to understand how first nations peoples learned. • B) By the end of the presentation students will be able to identify and list three ways that first nations peoples learned.

  7. Example A • A) By the end of the presentation students will be able to understand how first nations peoples learned. • ie. This is a poorly written learning objective because it is a hard objective to measure. This is because there is no specific way for the students to demonstrate their understanding of the concept. (how do you prove they understand?)

  8. Example B • B) By the end of the presentation students will be able to identify and list three ways that first nations peoples learned. • ie. This is a well written learning objective because it is specific and you can easily see if students are able to list three things by asking them to do so. Then you will know if you have achieved your learning objective or not.

  9. Items to be included in your agenda • Your agenda for your presentation should be a short list of everything you are going to do. Here is an example: • 1. TOPIC • 2. LEARNING OBJECTIVES • 3. ACTIVITIES • 4. REVIEW • 5. QUESTIONS • 6. QUIZ

  10. Things that must be included in your presentation: • YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO PRESENT A 5 MINUTE (X THE # OF PEOPLE IN YOUR GROUP) PRESENTATION TO THE CLASS ON YOUR TOPIC (S). YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE SURE TO INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING; • 1. AN AGENDA OF WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING THE PRESENTATION • 2. AT LEAST THREE LEARNING OBJECTIVES. • 3. A LESSON PRESENTATION PLAN. • 4. AN ACTIVITY BASED ON YOUR PRESENTATION. (something involving participation by class) ie. Hands on • 5. YOU MUST USE VISUALS. • 6. YOU MUST CREATE A QUIZ. (5 MARKS MINIMUM- MC/MTCH/LISTS/FIB/ OR T/F) • 7. YOU MUST BE PREPARED TO ANSWER QUESTIONS FROM THE CLASS.

  11. Creating a lesson plan • PART 1: LESSON PREPARATION • 1. You must have at least 3 measurable objectives to be achieved. • 2. You must have a list of all materials and resources needed for the lesson. (ie photocopies, visuals, handouts pictures, books, posters etc) • 3. You must have a lesson plan that includes the following: • a. You must have a chronological list of steps (in order) for your lesson. • b. You must have estimated times for how long each step will take. • c. You must have detailed notes for each step and how it will be taught. • d. You must have a detailed explanation/plan for how objectives will be measured. • e. You must have some sort of hands on way of presenting the material and teaching them the objectives you have created.

  12. Creating a lesson plan cont. • Part 2: Lesson Presentation 1. Introduction • a. You must create an agenda for your lesson and present it to the class. • b. You must inform the class of the objectives of your lesson and explain the purpose of each objective . • c. You must inform the class of the topic of your lesson, and how it relates to your topic using specific examples.

  13. Creating a lesson plan cont. • Part 2: Lesson Presentation cont. • Section 2: Lesson steps • a. You must go through your lesson plan step by step, explaining each part in detail. • b. You must attempt to make the lesson interesting as well as informative. • c. You must relate the lesson to your topic • d. You must make sure everyone in your group is involved in the lesson. • e. You must use visual aids to help with your lesson. • f. You must keep the class involved in the lesson.

You must show and explain an example of your activities to the class. • c. You must show how your assignment relates to the objectives of your lesson

You must check whether or not the class has achieved your objectives by giving them a quiz. • b. Ask the class if anyone has any questions and be prepared to answer them. • c. Do a review of your learning objectives • d. Give the class and quiz and mark the answers afterwards.

  17. What could you do as activities in your presentation? • At your table, brainstorm for 2 minutes on what you might be able to do as an activity for your presentation. • Be prepared for one person to share with the class.

  18. Discussion Time • Time to share your ideas. Make sure you write down at least 3 ideas you might be able to use.
