  1. National—Hikers Released • After two years in custody at Iranian prison, the hikers were released on $1 million bond • The hikers endured poor conditions, brutality, and little contact with the outside world

  2. National—Washington Monument OK • The Washington Monument is “structurally sound” after a comprehensive assessment of the structure’s interior. • A 5-day examination will now begin on the structure’s exterior • Cracks in the marble were discovered after the 5.8-magnitude earthquake on Aug. 23

  3. National—Senate reaches Deal • Senate agrees to a bipartisan deal that will end a dispute over FEMA funding that threatened to shutdown part of the government • This spending measure will fund the government for the first 7 weeks of the new fiscal year • The proposal contains additional disaster relief money to refill depleted FEMA funds

  4. World—Mt. Everest Crash • A Mt. Everest tour plane crashed, killing everyone on board (19 people.) • Among the dead were 2 Americans • The plane crashed in Kathmandu, 14 kilometers from the airport • In August, a plane crashed killing 14 on board • The tour costs $140
