Maya Angelou’s early life • Maya Angelou was born April 4th , 1928 in St.Louis,Missouri and Stamps,Arkansas • She is the daughter of bailey and Vivian (Baxter) Johnson • Original name: Marguerite Johnson • Was sent to live with her grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas who owned a general store in the black streets of Arkansas. • Maya and her brother returned to live with her mother in San Francisco where she attended George Washington High School and studied dance and drama on a scholarship at the California Labor School • Teacher Bertha Flowers helped Maya to talk again and encouraged her interest in literature

Maya Angelou's educational background • Maya attended mission school and she had won a scholarship to study the art of dance and drama at San Francisco's labor school. • She dropped out of school in her teenage years to become San Francisco's first African American female cable car conductor. • She later returned to high school, but she had became pregnant in her senior year and graduated a few weeks before giving birth to her son named Guy. • Maya attended George Washington High School in San Francisco . She took lessons in dance/drama on a scholarship at the California Labor School.

During this time took the name Maya Angelou. • Maya had recorded her album called Calypso Lady • Maya had developed her skills in writing. • She wrote poetry and had moved to New York. • Maya has a passion for music, dance, performance, and poetry.

Maya angelou timeline • In 1952, Maya had married Tosh Angelo, but there marriage didn’t last • Maya began her career as a nightclub singer and took the name Maya angelou in 1952 • In1954 to 1955, Maya toured in a production of Porgy and Bess. • In 1957, Maya recorded the album called Calypso Lady • In 1958 she developed skills in writing poetry, moved to New York and joined the Harlem Writers Guide. • In 1959, Maya became involved with Civil Rights Activist • At the request of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., she had became the northern coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
