  2. Importance of Young People • Next Generation of Adults • Easier to convince young people compared to older people. • "The weak must be chiselled away. I want young men and women who can suffer pain. A young German must be as swift as a greyhound, as tough as leather, and as hard as Krupp's steel."

Nazi Education • The Nazis were aware that education would create loyal Nazis by the time they reached adulthood • The use of propaganda were to be a common practice in Nazi schools. • All teachers had to be careful about what they said, as children were encouraged to inform the authorities if a teacher said something that did not fit in with the Nazi's curriculum for schools

SUBJECTS • History was based on the glory of Germany - a nationalistic approach was compulsory. • The German defeat in 1918 was explained as the work of Jewish and Marxist spies who had weakened the system from within • the Treaty of Versailles was the work of nations jealous of Germany's might and power • Biology became a study of the different races to 'prove' that the Nazi belief in racial superiority was a sound belief.

  7. Jewish Children • From 1935 on, after the Nuremburg Laws, Jewish school children were not allowed to attend schools. • The sole purpose of this educational structure was to create a future generation that was blindly loyal to Hitler and the Nazis.

  11. What was the Hitler youth? • The Hitler Youth catered for 10 to 18 year olds. There were separate organisations for boys and girls. The task of the boys section was to prepare the boys for military service. For girls, the organisation prepared them for motherhood.

  13. Boys • Boys at 10, joined the DeutschesJungvolk (German Young People) until the age of 13 when they transferred to the Hitler Jugend (Hitler Youth) until the age of 18 • Included marching, bayonet drill, grenade throwing, trench digging, map reading, gas defence.

Girls • Girls, at the age of 10, joined the Jungmadelbund (League of Young Girls) and at the age of 14 transferred to the Bund Deutscher Madel (League of German Girls). • Girls had to be able to run 60 metres in 14 seconds, throw a ball 12 metres, complete a 2 hour march, swim 100 metres and know how to make a bed.

Gestapo records show that young people were prepared to report their parents for acting against the Nazi party. Had to make membership compulsory in 1936. • 82% of young people were in the Hitler Youth. • Young people joined the youth groups for the activities and not for the political views of the Nazi party. • Some youth opposition groups- Edwelweiss Pirates/Swing Youth.
