  2. Marriage • Rutherford married Lucy Ware Webb. • She was the youngest daughter of Dr. James and Maria Cook Webb . • A graduate of Cincinnati's Wesleyan Women's College. • She was the first wife of a president to graduate from college. • They became the parents of eight children.

  3. Before Becoming The President • Hayes practiced law in Fremontand was city solicitor of Cincinnati. When the Civil War began, Hayes left his political career to join the Union Army. • Wounded five times, most seriously at the Battle of South Mountain, he earned a reputation for bravery in combat and was promoted to the rank of major general. • After the war, he served in the U.S. Congress from 1865 to 1867. Hayes left Congress to run for Governor of Ohio and was elected to two terms. • When his second term had ended, he resumed the practice of law for a time, but returned to politics in 1875 to serve a third term as governor.

  4. The Election • In 1876, Hayes was elected president in one of the most contentious and hotly disputed elections in American history. • He lost the popular vote to, Democrat Samuel J. Tilden, nevertheless Hayes won the presidency by the narrowest of margins after a Congressional commission awarded him twenty disputed electoral votes. • The result was the Compromise of 1877, in which the Democrats acquiesced to Hayes's election and Hayes accepted the end of military occupation of the South.

  6. After His Term • The President continued to be concerned with minorities, the poor, and immigrants. He believed that education and manual training would help all people achieve better lives. • Hayes' honesty and fairness renewed respect for the presidential office. Honoring his commitment not to accept a second term, Hayes retired to his beautiful home in Fremont, Ohio. • There, Hayes continued to give of his time helping veterans to receive their pensions, improving conditions in prisons, and promoting universal education. • He died at Fremont, Ohio on January 17, 1893, at the age of seventy.
