  2. We all know it… • …the TV show about a New York Comedian…

  3. Jerry Seinfeld… • Portrayed by… …Bob Hughes???

  4. …and his friends • Cramer… • …portrayed for us by… ….John Dawes???

  6. and George Costanza…. ….played by…. …hey, it had to be a bald guy, right?

  7. Seinfeld • A show about nothing.

  8. The History of Abandoned Mines… • Is ‘Seinfeldian’ in that it is a history of…

  9. …Nothing! ….nothing was backfilled…

  10. …nothing sealed…

  11. …nothing knocked down…

  12. Abandoned vs. Closed • When a mine stops production it can close or it can become abandoned. • Why?

  13. ‘S’ is the answer. • S = Seinfeld – i.e. nothing. • Or S = Entropy

  14. Entropy • ‘A measure of the degree of disorder in a substance or a system: Entropy always increases and available energy diminishes in a closed system.’

  15. Entropy and Pennsylvania’s Heritage • Mines close for lots of reasons. • Closure itself is not the problem – • Fixing available energy at that point in time maybe the problem. • If the site is properly reclaimed then it is stable. • Little or no energy is needed to maintain the sites conditions.

  16. Abandoned mines need energy!

  17. Each ‘system’ is unique. Land Reclamation Systems… …eliminate safety hazards… …seal, close, extinguish, backfill… …create a stable site.

  18. Perpetual problems…

  19. AMD Systems Not stable Require ‘energy’ Initial construction Operation Maintenance Component Replacement 2007 Roundtables Two clear messages Set aside full 30% Deal with OM&R. Perpetual Solutions

  20. Influent Quality and Quantity Effluent Standards TMDLs Technology Choices Present Value of Future Costs Models Annual costs Component life Inflation Interest Perpetual Motion Machines

  21. New Energy • Value from closed mines.

  22. Value From Mine Water • Value from mine water.

  23. Development of AMD for ‘fracing’ Marcellus Gas Wells. Co-treatment of flow back and brine at AMD facilities. New Energy from New Energy

  24. Abandoned Mines and Heritage • Santayana – “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” • Shelley – “Fear not for the future, weep not for the past.” • Shaw – “We learn from history that we learn nothing from history.”

  25. Abandoned Mines and Heritage • Ulrich – “Well behaved women rarely make history.”
