  9. Salivary Glands • You have one slide with all three glands on separate sections. Saliva consists of watery (serous) and mucous (thicker, sticky) secretions. • Sublingual • Contains only mucous cells • Parotid • Contains only serous cells (which secrete into ducts) • Submandibular (slide is labeled submaxillary) • Contains both mucous and serous cells

  10. Sublingual Salivary gland Mucous acinus with mucous cells inside Sublingual glands have only mucous cells

  11. Sublingual Salivary gland Mucous acinus with mucous cells inside Sublingual glands have mostly mucous cells

  12. Parotid salivary gland Ducts Serous cells Parotid glands have many ducts

  19. Small Intestine • Duodenum • Jejunum • Ileum

  20. Duodenum Villus Plica Plica Plica are the folds into the intestine. Villi are the finger-like projections into the lumen. Plica and villi are found in all three parts of the small intestine.

  21. Duodenum Adventitia Muscularis externa Mucosa Submucosa

  22. Duodenum Villus The villi of the duodenum are short and fat Brunner’s glands Brunner’s glands are only found in the duodenum. They produce bicarbonate to deactivate the acidity of the chyme from the stomach.

  23. Layers of the Small Intestine • Mucosa • Villi are located here • Submucosa • Brunner’s glands are located here (duodenum only) • Muscularis externa • Made of smooth muscle to push food along • Serosa (or adventitia) • Made of loose connective tissue

  24. Duodenum Villus Muscularis externa Brunner’s glands Mucosa Serosa Submucosa

  25. Jejunum Villus Plica

  26. Jejunum The villi of the jejunum are tall and skinny Villi

  27. Jejunum Serosa Muscularis externa Submucosa Mucosa

  28. Ileum Villus Plica

  29. Ileum Villi The villi of the ileum are not individually separate

  30. Ileum Mucosa Submucosa Muscularis externa Serosa

  31. Colon

  32. Colon

  33. Colon Villus Goblet Cells The villi of the colon are blending together and are full of goblet cells
