Background Prior to 1950, there were hardly any problem of waste management in the ratopul area and Kathmandu. • Most of the waste was organic in nature and used as manure. • System of dumping the wastes by the side of the river. • Gradually, increase in population, industrialization and urbanization lead to the increase in volume of waste. • Change in the nature of waste. • Lack of technical knowledge with existing polices limit.

  3. Problems • change in life pattern leading to change in nature of waste. • Improper dumping of waste. • Lack of proper landfill sites and waste management technologies. • Production of hazardous waste. • Effect in the health of the people.

  4. Environment Conservation Initiative (ECI) A non-profit organization in the area for the community based natural resource management. Objectives: • Waste management through local participation. • Re-use, re-cycle and composting of waste in ratopul area. • Public awareness program on environment conservation. • Environmental sanitations.
