Impact on Accessibility The Expected Results Increase access for persons with disabilities to agency Web sites and E-Government applications… The President’s Management Agenda, Fiscal Year 2002 FACT: The US Government spent 43 Billion on 2001 legislation. Section 508 of the American with Disabilities Act is one of them.

  4. The Federal Commitment – Bridging the Digital Divide • 54 Million Disabled Users in the United States should have access to hundreds of federal agencies with millions of pages. • Assistive technology is available to people with disabilities, Accessible Code has been the missing link. • Section 508 Standards Intent – Provide Standards For Accessible Code

  5. The General Problems • Section 508 Standards are not widely understood and require significant expertise to implement. • Current Hacks need Viable Alternatives (Layout tables) • Complicated Technical Issues When Implementing Standards

Delivering Web Accessibility The Complex Table Accessibility Solution • Table Headers must have a Unique ID • Each Data Cell must be Associated with ALL relevant headers by using that unique ID label in HEADER Attribute • Use ABBR Attribute to Save Brain Cycles in Subsequent Rows • Use Text Attributes (CAPTION, SUMMARY) to provide Overview and Description of Complex Relationships in Tables • AXIS Attribute Not Supported by Screen Readers
