Physical Science Introduction

Physical Science is the systematic exploration of nature followed by the careful analysis of observations. Scientists utilize a scientific method and conduct observations under controlled conditions. Modern Chemistry studies the composition and behavior of matter, along with its applications. It has its roots in ancient civilizations that searched for ways to transform substances. Chemical engineering is the design of processes that minimize environmental impact. Branches of Chemistry include inorganic, organic, and analytical chemistry. The connection between chemistry and success is exemplified by Charles Hall and Paul Héroult's discovery of the Hall-Héroult process for obtaining pure aluminum, which dramatically reduced its cost.

  1. Physical Science Introduction _______is the ___________exploration of ________followed by a _________ ____________of the observations. An ___________involves scientists who explore nature according to a ________ ________and make observations under __________conditions.

  2. Modern Chemistry • _________ is a science that studies the ________ of ____________and its ______________. • ________- beginnings of ______________ Searched for ways to __________________ ___________________________________ • __________________is the design of chemical processes that reduce ____________________ ___________________________

  3. Branches of Chemistry • Chemistry is divided into several branches. A few major branches are: • _________________ is the study of substances containing _______________. • _______________ is the study of substances derived from plants and animals (living things). • ___________________ is the study of all other substances that _________________________.

  4. Chemistry Connection: A Student Success • In 1886, pure aluminum metal cost over $100,000 per pound. • Charles Hall and Paul Héroult both independently discovered a method for obtaining pure aluminum from aluminum ore. • The industrial process for obtaining aluminum metal is referred to as the Hall-Héroult process. • Today, pure aluminum costs less than $1per pound.
