Answer these questions in your notes while the video is playing. • How have we as humans contributed to the warming of the earth? • What innovations or technology have we come up with to try and reduce the effects of pollution added to the atmosphere? • Do you think Charlotte has the same pollution problems as other large cities?

  4. We live in a bubble • The earth is a single self contained environment that we have a responsibility to keep clean. • This means we need to slow down our use of natural resources and keep our renewable resources clean and reusable. • Wait, what are resources?

  5. Natural Resources • Materials or substances such as minerals, forests, water, and fertile land that occur in nature and can be used for economic gain. • Basically, anything found in the Earth that we use in products or use to make products or to produce energy.

  6. Renewable resources • Those resources that can be used over and over again because they are cleaned and recycled naturally • Water • Sunlight • Wind • The air we breathe

  7. Nonrenewable resources • Those resources that are used at a far greater speed than they are produced • Fossil fuels • Products made from fossil fuels • Nuclear Energy • Some renewable resources can become nonrenewable

  8. What are fossil fuels? • Oil, gas, and coal • Easy to use and contain a lot of energy • They can affect the environment in many ways

Human Development/Population • Today there is about 7 billion people on the Earth • By 2050 (when you guys are in your 50s) the predicted population is expected to be around 9 billion people • Go back to the website on your phones and answer the following question. • Do you think that our technology can prevent environmental collapse, or will our planet be too far from saving by 2050?

  30. What if……. • An ecosystem of forests was destroyed and replaced with a large shopping mall? • Predict how this will most likely affect the environment of the area. • Result in habitat destruction • Decrease in animal population • Increase pollution

  31. What if…… • As a city’s population grows, wooded areas are replaced by housing developments. • What effect will this most likely have on the species in the wooded areas? • Many of the species will leave the area • Some may die if there is no other habitat available
