Today’s Agenda • Review definition of Satire • “Let’s Hear It for the Cheerleaders” Activity 3.16 pp. 227+ • Elements of Satire chart • Activity 3.17 OBJECTIVE: Students will identify the elements of satire in a text. Analyze how an author uses humor to develop a position. Students will determine tone in a satirical essay.

  14. “Let’s Hear it for the cheerleaders” • Share one example of humor you identified. • Create a chart like the one below. • Come up with the best five examples of humor and write them in the left column. • Determine the technique the author is using and write that in the center column. Hint: There could be more than one technique at play. • Then, determine the implied message and write it in the right column.

  15. Tone (p. 231) – Exit Slip • What does TONE mean? • #1 on page 231: What is a tone word that characterizes the entire piece? • #3 on page 231: What is your evidence? Provide a specific examplefrom the text and explain how that example conveys the tone word you listed for #1. • #2 on page 231: Identify and explain an example of irony.
