X and Y intercepts

X and Y intercepts . X-intercept: The point where a line crosses the x-axis. The coordinates are ( x , 0) where x is any number on the x-axis Y-intercept: The point where a line crosses the y-axis. The coordinates are ( 0, y ) where y is any number on the y-axis . y – intercept:

  1. X and Y intercepts

  2. X-intercept: The point where a line crosses the x-axis. The coordinates are ( x, 0) where x is any number on the x-axis Y-intercept: The point where a line crosses the y-axis. The coordinates are ( 0, y) where y is any number on the y-axis

  3. y – intercept: ( 0 , 5 ) x – intercept: ( 3, 0 )

  4. As we continue working on linear equations, you will need to be able to determine both x and y – intercepts We can determine BOTH the x and y – intercepts algebraically when given a linear equation in the standard form Ax + By = C

  5. Determine the x and y – intercepts for the equation: 5x + 2y = 30 -start by find the x – intercept. Think back to what the coordinates for the x – intercept are. ( x , 0 ) Since the coordinate for y is zero, we can substitute zero into our given equation in place of y!

  6. 5x + 2(0) = 30 NOW SOLVE FOR x! 5x + 0 = 30 x = 6 The x – intercept is ( 6 , 0 )

  7. Now determine the y-intercept! HOW?! Sub in zero in place of x 5(0) + 2y = 30 0 + 2y = 30 Y = 15 The y-intercept is ( 0 , 15)

  8.  YOUR TURN!  Determine the x and y intercepts for the equation: 6x + y = 4 x – intercept: ( 2/3 , 0 ) y – intercept: ( 0 , 4 )
