  3. Scriptural Text – Romans 12:14-21 • 14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. 17Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. 18If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.19Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord. 20On the contrary: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head."21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. 4. There are some things we shouldn’t give . . . • In becoming a transformed individual with a renewed mind (v. 2), there are some traits that Paul outlines that should be reflective of who we now are (or who we’re aspiring to be) • i.e.: this is what the new you should look like The Church at Mesquite

  5. There are some things we shouldn’t give . . . • Based on the list Paul gives throughout the rest of chapter 12, there are 10 things that he says we shouldn’t give here . . . The Church at Mesquite

  6. There are some things we shouldn’t give . . . • 6. verse 14: we shouldn’t givethe finger • 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. 7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, 8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. (James 3:6-10) The Church at Mesquite

  7. There are some things we shouldn’t give . . . • 7. verse 15: we shouldn’t give a cold shoulder • We must learn to be there emotionally for those around us: • Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  (Col. 3:12) • The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.  The Church at Mesquite

  8. There are some things we shouldn’t give . . . • 8. verse 16,18: we shouldn’t give discord • Discord: starting conflicts, causing disharmony • Paul explains in Gal. 5: 13-26 the difference between a sinful nature and a Spiritual nature, listing discord as an attribute belonging to a sinful nature in v. 19 The Church at Mesquite

  9. There are some things we shouldn’t give . . . • 9. verses 19,20: we shouldn’t give revenge • "'Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD. (Lev. 11:18) • Revenge is reserved for the Lord; He alone is righteous enough to judge and give out punishment. We should be glad we are judged with greater mercy than we give. The Church at Mesquite

  10. There are some things we shouldn’t give . . . • 10. verse 21: we shouldn’t give life to the old man • 3Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. 6For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin-- 7because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. (Rom. 6:3-7) • Constant struggle with the spiritual self and the physical self - Rom. 7:14-25) • The person you feed is the one that thrives!!! The Church at Mesquite
