  1. Engineering Design Process

  2. Step One Identify the Challenge This is usually the first step of the EDP. What is the problem? What are the project requirements? What are the limitations? Gather information and conduct research .

  3. Step One Identify the Challenge Key EDP Cards from first activity: Examine existing products Write down your ideas Identify limitations

  4. Step two Explore Ideas Imagine and brainstorm ideas. Be creative; build upon the wild and crazy ideas of others. The ideas can be sketchedand/or written. Explore, compare and analyze many possible solutions.

  5. Step two Explore Ideas Key EDP Cards from first activity: Write notes about your ideas Make sketches Brainstorm for ideas

  6. Step THREE Plan and Develop Based on the needs identified, select the most promising idea. How will it work? What environmental and cultural considerations will you evaluate? What materials and tools are needed? Draw a final sketch of your idea.

  7. Step THREE Plan and Develop Key EDP Cards from first activity: Get tools and materials Establish a scale Make a scale drawing Build a prototype

  8. Step FOUR Test and Evaluate Build a prototype and test it against your design objectives. Does the new product work as intended. Talk about what works, what doesn’t and what could work better.

  9. Step FOUR Test and Evaluate Key EDP Cards from first activity: Analyze survey data Test the product Ask people if they like the product Redesign the product if necessary

  10. Step FIVE Present the Solution This is the final step in the EDP. If your initial design doesn't fully solve the problem or meet the challenge, go back and repeat the above steps. Give a short presentation /demonstration to the class about their product.

  11. Step FIVE Present the Solution Key EDP Cards from first activity: Sell the new product Apply for a patent Analyze profit/loss results Make a commercial
