2. Our Lesson Focus To determine what type of government filled the void after Charles I’s death, and why it wasn’t successful.
To recognize the “see-saw” effect of various leaders during the Restoration & Glorious Revolution
To acknowledge that our Canadian Charter of Rights was influenced by republican thinking in the Bill of Rights of 1689.
3. Lord Oliver Cromwell
4. Power Corrupts: Lord Oliver Cromwell’s End Cromwell led the New Model Army to defeat Charles I Royalists
Resettled rebellious Ireland w English Protestants in North & Catholics pushed South
Became Lord Protector (read: DICTATOR) of England after Charles’ execution
Hated Catholics, enforced Blue Laws restricting Christmas, dancing, gambling, (you get the picture…)
Died in 1658, body exhumed 2 years later by Charles II & hung up for display as a warning.

He tried to protect Catholics (his brother James II was one)
Parliament reacted by passing Test Act banning Catholics from some choice political jobs
Charles dies in 1685…

12. The Glorious (and bloodless) Revolution… Parliament invites James II Protestant daughter, Mary and her husband William to rule England
But…they must obey parliament’s wishes
